LAWRENCEVILLE—The Broncs began the 2005-06 season by splitting a dual meet with UMBC Saturday. “Today was a surprise,” said head coach Steve Fletcher. “Last year they beat us pretty good. UMBC wins their league almost every year. We put them on the schedule four years ago to make it more competitive, and now it looks like we’re catching up to them.”
The win by the Rider men broke the Retrievers' 21 meet dual winning streak, dating to November 1, 2003 when UMBC fell to Navy 122-121.
Rider was led by the brother and sister team of junior Brandon Modrov and freshman Priscilla Modrov (Smithtown, NY/Hauppauge). Priscilla broke both the Rider team and Coppola Pool record by winning the 400 individual medley (4:32.58) and also won the 200 backstroke (2:07.56), while Brandon won the 400 individual medley (4:10.31) and the 200 breaststroke (2:11.60). “Priscilla broke the school and pool record by over three seconds and there is still room for improvement.”
The men were led by senior Dan Burgess (Greeley, CO/Union Colony Prep), who won the 200 free (1:42.44) and the 100 free (47.52). “Burgess was amazing,” said Fletcher. “He is going to be sorely missed next year when he is in medical school. He’s an incredible competitor, with a lot of maturity and a lot of good humor.”
“I’ve wanted to be a doctor every since high school,” said Burgess. “I’m interested in going into anesthesiology or radiology. During the summer I work with Dr. John Adamovics here at Rider, using a three dimensional dosimeter, which measures radiation. It has to do with cancer therapy. I felt great today. It was a good meet, with fast times for everybody.”
Also for the Rider men, sophomore Dylan Korn (Hawthorne, NY/Westlake) won both the 1-meter dive (242.17) and the 3-meter dive (269.55), junior Eric McFerin (Columbus, OH/Upper Arlington) won the 50 free (21.86), freshman Josh Rosenbluth (Lawrenceville/Lawrence) won the 200 backstroke (1:52.87), and the 400 medley relay team of Rosenbluth, Burgess, sophomore Mathew Nicolino (Drexel Hill, PA/Upper Darby) and senior Trevor Vernal (Milford, CT/Notre Dame) won in 3:32.91.
For the Rider women, junior Courtney Clark (Broomall, PA/Cardinal O'Hara) won the 1,000 free (10:37.01) and the 500 free (5:12.53). “Courtney had a great swim,” said Fletcher. “She was behind early in the 500 but didn’t lose confidence, and got stronger and stronger, which shows a lot of maturity.”
The Broncs host MAAC-rival Marist November 5.
