BALTIMORE, MD—In a rematch of the 2004 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championship game, the Broncs ended the 2005 regular season with a loss at Loyola Saturday. “We’ve played every team in the MAAC now, and we are better prepared for the upcoming tournament,” said Rider head coach Kevin Long.
One move Coach Long made in preparation for the tournament was to move junior back Lauren Terzyk (Churchville, PA/Council Rock-South) from the back to center midfield. “We moved LT from one of the back four to center-mid, and she had a strong game for us today,” said Long. “She’s a very dangerous player, and we’d like to see her join the attack more. She’s a play maker for us.”
“I played center-mid once before and I like it,” said Terzyk, who finished the 2004 season second on the team in assists and fourth on the team in points. “I can play more of an attacking style there.”
Terzyk was a member of the MAAC All-Rookie team as a freshman, and last season she scored to give Rider a 1-0 lead in the MAAC semi-final victory over Siena. “I’m looking forward to the tournament,” said Terzyk. “We’ve played everyone and there isn’t one team that is unbeatable.”
The tournament favorite will be the defending champion and top seed, Loyola. The victory over Rider Saturday was the tenth straight for the Greyhounds (14-4, 9-0 MAAC). Loyola beat Rider 2-0 in the MAAC title Game last season.
Loyola out-shot Rider 13-2 Saturday. “We got in a couple of times,” said Long.
Rider junior goalkeeper Hannah Harris (Denville/Morris Knolls) made one save in the first half, and sophomore Kim Carter (Chantilly, VA) made two saves in the second half.
Rider (2-14-2, 1-7-1 MAAC) will now travel to Orlando, Florida for the 10-team MAAC Championship tournament, October 27-31. The official pairings of the tournament will be announced Monday. Rider looks to be the ninth seed, and will play the eighth seed on Thursday in the first round. “It doesn’t matter who we play,” said Terzyk. “No team so dangerous that we can’t beat them. We just have to take it one game at a time, and hope to play four games in Florida.”
The Championship Game is Monday at 1pm, televised live on ESPNU. “We have the ability to win this thing, we just have to step up and do it,” Terzyk said.
