Saint Peter’s College 2, Rider University 1 (2 o.t.)

LAWRENCEVILLE— Rider freshman Michelle Matricardi (Abington, PA/Abington) won’t mind if the Bronc soccer team doesn’t get a chance to see the Magic Kingdom when it travels to Disney World for the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championship tournament in two weeks.  “I’ve never been to Disney World, but if we’re too busy playing every day to see the park I won’t mind, that’ll mean we’re winning and still playing,” Matricardi said.

Matricardi scored her first collegiate goal Sunday to tie the score at 1-1 in an eventual 2-1 overtime loss to Saint Peter’s in a MAAC contest. “I saw the ball, challenged for a head ball, got control and kicked it in,” said Matricardi. “It was a great feeling to get my first collegiate goal under my belt.  The first goal is always the hardest.  Now I’ll be able to score more.”

“Michele is finding her game,” said Rider head coach Kevin Long.  “She missed a few weeks with illness, and it is good to have her back.”

“I had an ear infection that resulted in vertigo,” said Matricardi. “It was the worse thing I ever had. The room was constantly spinning. I missed a week of classes.”

Saint Peter’s (2-12, 1-5 MAAC) took a 1-0 lead midway through the first half. Rider (2-12-1, 1-6 MAAC) out-shot Saint Peter’s 18-7. Saint Peter’s scored on its only shot in the first half, and its only shot in the second overtime period.

“It is very disappointing when you dominate a team and don’t get the result you want,” Long said.

Kyle Marsh took a long pass from Caitlin Postel and took a shot from 18 yards out that hit Rider sophomore goalkeeper Kim Carter (Chantilly, Va.) but still managed to go in for the game winner in the 104th minute. “Saint Peter’s has a new coach (Shawn Tarquino) and a new attitude, and is very improved,” said Long.  “The game winning goal was manufactured by a strong work rate.  They deserved to win the game.”

Carter made two saves for Rider, while Angelina Albruzzese made six saves for Saint Peter’s.

Rider plays its final home game Tuesday at 3:00 pm against Manhattan. That game was rained out on October 14.
