TEANECK—After defeating Wagner on Friday the Broncs lost to Manhattan and host Fairleigh Dickinson on the second day of the FDU Invitational Saturday. The Broncs were playing a bit short-handed, as sophomore Nastasja Avramovic (Philadelphia, PA/Northeast) and junior Megan Smith (Webster, NY) were out of the line up with injuries.  “We were a bit thin today, playing with no subs,” said Rider head coach Emily Ahlquist.

Against Manhattan, Rider lost the first two games 30-26 and 30-16 before coming back to win 32-30 and 30-25, forcing a fifth and deciding game.  Manhattan won the fifth game 15-11.  Against FDU, Rider lost 30-26 and 32-30 before coming back to win 30-28, but lost the fourth game 30-20.

“It seemed like we didn’t start playing until the third game in both matches,” said Ahlquist.

Against Manhattan, senior Stefanie Lombardo (New Castle, Pa/Laurel) compiled 15 kills and 18 digs.  “Stef played great today,” said Ahlquist.  “They did not have an all-tournament team, but if they did, she would have certainly been on it.”

Senior Embrey Minor (Davidsonville, Md/Bowie) had 23 assists, senior Kristine Dormer (Bowie, Md/Elizabeth Seton) had 16 assists and 10 kills and freshman Lacey Johnson (Aurora, Colo./Grandview) had 21 digs and 10 kills.

The contest with Manhattan was not a MAAC contest. Rider will host Manhattan on October 21 and that match will count in the MAAC standings.

Against FDU, Lombardo led Rider with 24 kills, 16 digs and four service aces.  Dormer added 12 kills and 17 assists, while Minor had 29 assists. Johnson had 14 digs and eight kills.

“There were lots of positives today,” said Ahlquist.  “We had stretches where we played great, there just weren’t enough of them.”

Rider hosts Loyola in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match October 15.
