FAIRFIELD, CT-The Broncs lost a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game at Fairfield Friday, despite out-shooting the host Stags  13-10.

“This was a good game,” said Rider head coach Kevin Long. “We’re moving in the right direction.  We had more positives today, and we got good play out of almost everyone.”

One of the players Coach Long “got good play” out of was junior Lauren Terzyk (Churchville, PA/Council Rock-South).  “LT is a bright spot in the back for us right now,” Long said.  “She is very composed on the field. She looks casual, which almost lulls opponents in. She sees the field so well, and her leadership is something we really need this year.”

“Our intensity was awesome today,” said Terzyk, a veteran of 48 Rider games.  “It was just unlucky that we didn’t finish when we had the scoring opportunities.” Fairfield goalkeeper Brett Maron made nine saves. “Our work rate was good, and I felt we played well. Fairfield is a good team.”

Fairfield (6-4-1, 3-1 MAAC) took a 1-0 lead 15 minutes into the second half on an unassisted goal by Amanda Vargo, and scored again less than seven minutes later on a goal by Laura Mrowka. “They scored a controversial goal early in the second half,” said Long, “and then we made a mistake and they capitalized on it to make it 2-0. Fairfield is much improved this year.”

On the first goal, Rider sophomore goalkeeper Kim Carter (Chantilly, Va.) caught a high chip shot over her shoulder like a receiver in football, and fell onto the goal line. “She fell on the goal line but the ball never appeared to cross the line,” said Long.  “The alternate referee on the sideline hesitated, and then called it a goal.”  Carter made three saves in the game.

Rider (2-10-1, 1-4 MAAC) plays a MAAC game at Iona Sunday.

“We’re starting to turn things around,” said Terzyk.  “The chemistry on the field is getting to be where we need it to be.”
