College Tennis

Men: Rider University 6, St. Francis College-NY 1
Women: Rider University 7, St. Francis College-NY 0

LAWRENCEVILLE--Rider Associate Vice-President for Academic Affairs, Ron Walker, might have to add Athletic Recruiter to his title. For it was Walker who is responsible for freshman Tanya Cota coming to Rider from Tucson, Arizona. On Sunday Cota won at first singles, compiling her first collegiate win, to help the Broncs swept St. Francis of New York.

“Our vice president, Ron Walker, went to college with Tanya’s high school tennis coach,” Rider head coach Ed Torres said.  “They were talking one night last year about how his number one player wanted to go east to college, and Walker asked him ‘why not Rider?’ and that’s how it started.  Tanya has a very good serve and strong ground strokes.  She is going to be a good college player.”

Twin sisters Devin and Caitlin Crawbuck (Jacobstown, N.J./Northern Burlington Regional) won in singles and first doubles.

For the Rider men, senior Mike Greenberg (Newtown, PA/Council Rock) won at third singles and second doubles, and sophomore Jimmy Leone (Forked River, N.J./Lacey Township) won at fourth singles and third doubles.

The Rider women have a make-up match at Monmouth Tuesday, and the men host Marist Wednesday.

"Tanya has played some very tough, experienced opponents so far,” said Rider head coach Ed Torres.  “To play number one as a freshman is a very difficult thing to do.”  It helps to be recruited by a vice president.
