Rider University 2, Marist College 0

LAWRENCEVILLE--There’s nothing like playing in front of a former coach to bring out your best. Rider freshmen Amanda Scully (Bloomfield) and Jenna Balestriere (Scotch Plains) played for Marist head coach Elizabeth Roper on the NJ Rangers club team the last two years, and the duo combined on the game-winning goal against Marist Sunday in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game. “I try to play the same every game,” said Scully, “but that definitely added something today.”

Scully took a crossing pass from Balestriere and scored her second goal of the season to give Rider (2-9-1, 1-3 MAAC) a 1-0 lead 30 minutes into the game. “The first goal was a great pass from Jenna, and since we both played for Coach Roper that added to the excitement of the goal,” said Scully.

“Scully is a hard worker and is crafty with the ball,” said Rider head coach Kevin Long.  “She has good vision, can spring players, and creates opportunities.  And she’s the most fouled player on the team.”

“I do get fouled a lot, but that’s because I go in hard, and that’s okay, fouls are part of the game,” said Scully.  “Once I ‘get stuck in’ I feel better, once you make some contact.”

“We played so much better today,” said Long.  “We lacked that crucial error that we’ve been making almost every game. We played well and it translated into a 2-0 win”

Sophomore Stephanie Madden (Fair Haven, NJ/Rumson-Fair Haven Regional) took a pass from Scully and scored her team-high fourth goal of the season with less than 15 minutes remaining in the game. “Someone sent a cross to me, and I just tried to get something on it,” Scully remembers.  “It went to Steph who had a great finish.”

Rider out-shot Marist 12-6, including 8-2 in the second half. “We had good offensive chances today,” said Long.  “Marist is an improved team.”

Rider sophomore goalkeeper Kim Carter (Chantilly, Va.) made two saves for her first shutout of the season.

“There was a different atmosphere today,” said Scully.  “Before the game we were determined to turn things around today, and everyone stepped their game up.  Coach Roper just added to it.”

Rider plays at Fairfield in a MAAC game Friday.
