Rider at Gotham Cup
Kajunski Qualifies for ECAC in Jump
NEW YORK, NY—The Broncs competed in the NYC Gotham Cup Friday night, held at the 168th Street Armory. “They went out and competed after three weeks of two-a-days,” said Rider head coach Rob Pasquariello, “and probably did as well as they could have in this stage of our training. There were over 50 teams here and that makes it tough. Events take so long and some athletes are warming up for an hour waiting for their event, so that makes it tough to have quality performances.”
For the Rider women, junior Kelly Kajunski (Glenmore, Pa./Downington East) qualified for the ECAC Championships in the high jump (5’7”), placing third. “Kelly did well,” Pasquariello said. “She was the highlight of the meet. She jumped well.”
Junior Tabatha Haskins (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) placed sixth in the triple jump (37’ 2.5”) and 12th in the 60m hurdles (9.32). “Tabby jumped well, especially being her first week back from studying abroad in the Gallipolis Islands for three weeks,” Pasquariello said.
The men’s 4 x 800m relay of freshman Peter Wandell (State College, Pa./State College), senior Ryan Donohue (Freehold), freshman Mike Soroko (Kinnelon) and senior Jeff Stead (Fairless Hills, Pa./Pennsbury) placed third (7:56.79).
Sophomore Kevin Breen (Langhorne, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) placed fifth in the pole vault (14’ 9”). “Kevin had an excellent day,” Pasquariello said. “That was the second best indoor jump ever for us.”
Sophomore Phil Capaldi (Woxall, Pa./Souderton) placed fifth in the 5,000m (15:53.44). “That beat his PR (personal record) by about 10 seconds,” Pasquariello said, “and he raced well. He has a good head on his shoulders when it comes to racing and tactics, and he showed it today.”
Freshman Christian Gonzalez (Somerset/Franklin Twp.) placed ninth in the mile (4:17.51).
Also for the Rider women, junior Kelly Wojciehowski (Fair Haven) placed seventh in the 5,000 (18:56.87) and freshman Chelsea Callan (Hazlet/Raritan) placed seventh in the mile (5:16.09). “Wojo had a solid race, as did Callan in the mile,” Pasquariello said.
Sophomore Alicia Price (Voorhees/Eastern) placed seventh in the wt. throw (44’ 11.75”) and eighth in the shot put (39’ 11.25”), senior Rebecca Clatch (Drums, Pa./Hazelton Area) placed 10th in the pole vault (9’10”) and sophomore Kelsey Kohler (Southampton, Pa./St. Basil's Acad.) placed 10th in the 3,000m (11:00.29).
