Rider Athletics Honors Dr. King’s Memory with Community Service
Collections/Handouts Monday Night at Basketball Game
LAWRENCEVILLE—The Rider University colors are Cranberry, White and Grey. On Monday night, January 21, the Broncs are going Green.
As fans leave Alumni Gymnasium following the televised Rider-Iona Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men’s basketball game, they will be given reusable shopping bags by Brian, an 11 year old sixth grader from Princeton Friends School. Brian recently received an environmental excellence award from the Governor for his work, encouraging the use of reusable bags rather that ecologically unsound plastic bags.
Being Martin Luther King Day, Rider Athletics will honor his legacy with two collection drives taking place in the Alumni Gym lobby before the game.
In conjunction with the Philadelphia Cares’ 12th Annual Winter Coat Drive, a collection of ‘gently used’ or new coats will be collected for those in need.
Rider Community Scholars/Bonner Leaders have partnered with ECO-CELL, a company which collects used cell phones, batteries and accessories. These items will also be collected in the Alumni Gym lobby prior to the game. The phones will be distributed to low income users abroad and to selected local organizations, such as Battered Women’s Programs for emergency use (911 calls) or recycled through e-waste to protect the environment.
Before the 7pm tip off, drop off your used coat or old cell phone and on your way out pick up an environmentally friendly reusable shopping bag.
Dr. King recognized the power of service to strengthen communities and achieve common goals. So does Rider Athletics. So can you.
