Rider at Penn State Relays
STATE COLLEGE, PA—The Broncs competed at the Penn State Relays Saturday. “It was a good meet for our first time back in competition,” said Rider head coach Rob Pasquariello. “It was a much deeper meet across the board than last year, as far as more teams, more talent, more interest, and it gave our kids a real chance to see where they are at, going against some of the top schools in the East. It was a great atmosphere for a collegiate meet, nice facility, there was a good crowd and I think for the most part our kids responded.”
For the men’s the 4 x mile relay team of senior John Smith (Cliffwood Beach/Matawan), freshman Mike Soroko (Kinnelton), freshman Christian Gonzalez (Somerset/Franklin Twp.) and junior Matt Dahl (West Keansburg/Raritan) placed second in a Rider record time of 17:48.46).
The women’s 4 x mile relay team of sophomore Lauren Lester (Schenectady, NY/Mohanosen), sophomore Kelsey Kohler (Southampton, PA/St. Basil’s), junior Megan Crowe (Philadelphia, PA/St. Hubert’s) and junior Kelly Wojciehowski (Fair Haven) placed third in a Rider record time of 22:28.35.
The men’s 4 x 800 relay team of freshman Peter Wandell (State College, PA/State College), Gonzalez, senior Ryan Donahue (Freehold) and senior Jeff Stead (Fairless Hills, PA/Pennsbury) placed third with an IC4A qualifying time of 7:49.78.
The women’s 4 x 200 relay team of sophomore Karlise Cureton (Harrisburg, PA/Susquehanna Twp.), freshman Shaylah Counts (Newark/Shabazz), freshman Courtney Melvin (Pennsauken) and freshman Tiera Rice (Tappan) finished sixth in a time of 1:47.79, just missing the Rider record of 1:48.09. “That’s three freshmen and a sophomore coming that close to the school record,” Pasquariello said, “so that bodes well for the future.”
The women’s 4 x 800 relay team of Crowe, sophomore Kelly Dissinger (Landisville, PA/Hempfield), freshman Chelsea Callan (Hazlet/Raritan) and freshman Johanna Clarke (Laurelton, NY/Mary Louis Academy) finished eighth in a Rider record time of 9:45.85.

Junior Elizabeth Spokony (Woodstown) placed fifth in the triple jump (37’ 3”) and was 15th in the long jump (16’ 4.5”). “She had four ‘PRs’ in the triple jump and ‘PR’d’ by two feet,” Pasquariello said. “She really put it together and I felt really good for her.”
Senior Rebecca Clatch (Drums, PA/Hazelton Area) was fifth in the pole vault, tying the Rider record of 10’ 6”.
Sophomore Alicia Price (Voorhees/Eastern) placed ninth in the wt. throw (46’ 8.25”) and 12th in the shot put (38’ 1.5”). Cureton placed 10th in the 55m hurdles (8.58).
