HAMPTON, VIRGINIA—The Rider University wrestling team will take part in the Virginia Duals National College Tournament this weekend.
Rider is the eighth seed in the 16-team field and takes on Duquesne Friday morning at 9:00am. At 1:00 pm the Broncs will wrestle either Colonial Athletic Association foe Drexel or the top seed, third ranked Oklahoma State.
“Oklahoma State just beat the number one team (Iowa) in the nation, so they obviously are going to be tough if we get them,” said Rider head coach Gary Taylor.
Rider is led by senior T.J. Morrison (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cedar Cliff), who is ranked 11th in the nation at 197, and senior Don Fisch (Williamstown, N.J./Delsea), an All-American as a junior 141 who is currently 11-7 at 149. Fisch enters the Virginia Duals with 99 career wins.
Junior Doug Umbehauer (Shamong, N.J./Lenape) is ranked 11th in the nation at 184 but is questionable for the VA Duals, after missing the last two dual meets with a concussion.
The Broncs line-up was recently bolstered with the addition of junior Jason Lapham (West Chazy, N.Y./Beekmantown) and junior Ed Bordas (Montgomery, N.Y./Valley Central). Lapham came to Rider from Penn State and is 6-2 at 165, while Bordas came to Rider from Binghamton and is 3-2 at heavyweight.
Competition continues all day Saturday.
