BRONX, NY—The 2007 Rider University cross country season came to an end Saturday, for the men at the ICAAAA Championships and for the women at the ECAC Championships at Van Cortlandt Park. “Coming off the big effort we had last week, we responded pretty well,” said Rider coach Bob Hamer. “It is difficult to have two big weeks in a row, especially with such a young group, The kids responded real well.”
The men ran in the Championship race and placed 14th of 15 teams. The women ran in the University Division and placed 14th of 25 teams. “we ran pretty tough today,” Hamer said.
For the Rider men, senior John Smith (Cliffwood Beach/Matawan) set a new Rider record for the Van Cortlandt Park course, finishing 28th with a time of 25:50 on the 5.0 mile course. “John really put himself out there today,” Hamer said. “He was with the leaders all the way through the first three miles, and was still in the top 20 at the four mile mark. He did a great job.”
For the Rider women, junior Kelly Wojciehowski (Fair Haven/Rumson Fair Haven) placed 37th in a time of 19:36 on the 3.1 mile course.
Also for the Rider men, freshman Christian Gonzalez (Somerset/Franklin Twp.) ran a personal best time at Van Cortlandt, placing 55th in 26:12. “That was the best Chris as run on this course,” Hamer said.
Junior Matt Dahl (West Keansburg/Raritan) placed 96th in 27:01, senior Jeff Stead (Fairless Hills, PA/Pennsbury) was 109th in 27:13 and freshman Michael Soroko (Kinnelon) placed 128th in 27:39.
Also for the Rider women, sophomore Kelsey Kohler (Southampton, PA/Saint Basil’s Academy) placed 78th in 20:21, sophomore Lauren Lester (Schenectady, NY/Mohonasen) was 91st in 20:37, junior Megan Crowe (Philadelphia, PA/St. Hubert’s) was 94th in 20:39 and freshman Chelsea Callan (Hazlet/Raritan) was 114th in 20:55. “We had good grouping,” Hamer said. “A little too much between one and two, but that is about what we had all year, so I guess we can’t complain. We ran a decent race.”
