The Broncs lost on a last second foul shot to Murray State in the 2007-08 season opener Friday night. Junior Harris Mansell (Cheltenham, PA/Cheltenham) scored a career-high 21 points for Rider (0-1). Trailing 65-63, Mansell went to the foul line with 3.5 seconds left and made both free throws to tie the score at 65-65. Sophomore Ryan Thompson ((Mt. Laurel/Lenape) scored a career-high 23 points, after scoring 12 of Rider’s first 19 points of the game, and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Broncs. Rider senior Jason Thompson (Mt. Laurel/Lenape) was held to 13 points and six rebounds.

Against Monmouth senior Janele Henderson (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Loughln) scored a career-high 25 points to lead Rider to the win. The last time Rider began the season 1-0 was also with a victory over Monmouth, in 2002. Rider out-scored Monmouth (0-1) 11-5 over the first four minutes of the second half, four points by junior Shaunice Parker (Waldorf, Md./West Lake), to take a 44-28 lead. Parker compiled her third career ‘double-double’ with 10 points and a career-high 17 rebounds. Parker had seven rebounds in the first seven minutes of the game. Holding a 19-11 lead, Rider went on an 8-4 run, three points by senior co-captain Kelli Sawyer (Philadelphia, Pa./Friends Select), to take a 27-15 lead with 4:00 left in the half. Sawyer finished with 10 points and five assists in 31 minutes of action. At UMBC Henderson scored 19 points, with sophomore Tammy Meyers (Willingboro, N.J./Willingboro) adding 16 points, including 14 in the second half.

Against Lehigh and Penn senior Priscilla Modrov (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge) won the 400 IM (4:36.73), 200 fly (2:08.23) and 100 fly (58.78) with junior Amanda Burke (Churchville, Pa./William Tennent) winning both the one-meter (283.05) and three-meter dive (267.10), freshman Carmen Menendez (Fairfax, Va./Oakton) won the 100 breast (1:10.13) with the women’s 400 free relay of freshman Brianna Burns (Chestnut Ridge, N.Y./Spring Valley), freshman Alicia Fimple (Drexel Hill, Pa./Upper Darby), sophomore Lovette Leonhard (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) and freshman Raquel Riestra (Plainsboro, N.J./West Windsor-Plainsboro North) winning with a time of 3:45.13. Junior Josh Rosenbluth (Lawrenceville, N.J./Lawrence) won the 100 back (52.59) and 200 back (1:56.88) with senior Dylan Korn (Hawthorne, N.Y./Westlake) winning the one-meter dive (277.95) and freshman Drew Modrov (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge) winning the 50 free (21.58).

The Broncs lost to the powerful Tigers of Missouri in the 2007-08 season opener Friday night. senior Don Fisch (Williamstown, N.J./Delsea), ranked fourth in the nation among 141 pounders, moved up a weight to take on the ninth ranked 149 pounder, Josh Wagner, and won a major decision. An All-American last year, Fisch trailed 5-0 in the first period and 8-7 in the third period before winning for the 89th time in his career. Senior T.J. Morrison (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cedar Cliff) ranked 14th in the nation among 197 pound wrestlers, lost by just one point to the fourth ranked wrestler in the nation.

Both the Rider University men’s and women’s teams enjoyed their highest finishes ever at the NCAA Division I Mid-Atlantic Regional Cross Country Championships, hosted by Lehigh University Saturday.
The Rider men placed 14th of 32 teams, while the Rider women were 22nd of 33 teams. For the Rider men, senior John Smith (Cliffwood Beach/Matawan) placed 38th of the 201 runners, covering the 10k course in 31:20. For the Rider women, junior Kelly Wojciehowski (Fair Haven/Rumson Fair Haven) placed first for the Broncs, 97th overall among the 208 runners, covering the 6k course in 22:50. Also for the men, freshman Christian Gonzalez (Somerset/Franklin Twp.) placed 58th in 31:45, junior Matt Dahl (West Keansburg/Raritan) was 74th in 32:01.

The soccer season came to an end Wednesday in the first round of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championship Tournament, held at Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex. Siena, the eighth seed, took a 2-0 lead 14 minutes into the game. Rider, the ninth seed, cut the lead to 2-1 when sophomore Nico Tramontana (Vineland/Sacred Heart) took a pass from senior Mark Ockenhouse (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East) off of a corner kick and scored his team-high sixth goal of the season. Freshman Tom Dunn (Westampton, N.J./Rancocas Valley) scored on a penalty kick to cut the lead to 5-2 10 minutes into the second half, but that was as close as the Broncs could get. The Saints out-shot Rider 14-12. Junior goalkeeper Randall Zapolski (Lawrence) made two saves for the Broncs.

Against Lock Haven in the NEC Title Game junior Tricia Crotty (Lewistown, Pa./Indian Valley) gave Rider a 1-0 lead on Rider’s first and only shot of the game 26:40 into the first half. The goal was Crotty’s team-high tenth of the season and 32nd of her career, eighth highest ever at Rider. In the semi-finals against Sacred Heart freshman Amanda Barretta (Roseland, N.J./West Essex) scored her third goal of the season with 15:23 remaining for the game-winner. Rider senior goalie Jen LoCastro (Cherry Hill, N.J./Camden Catholic) made two saves to pick up her 11th win of the season. Crotty and Walker also scored.

Against Fairfield in the season finale freshman Kara Perkoski (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) took a pass from senior Amy Vinarsky (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) and scored third goal of the season to cut the lead to 4-1 with 20 minutes left to play. Rider freshman goalkeeper Alex Post (Chalfont, Pa./Central Bucks West) made seven saves.

Against Iona junior Lacey Johnson (Aurora, Colo./Grandview) (23 digs, 16 kills), freshman Katelyn Thompson (Tucson, Ariz./Catalina Foothills) (14 digs, 12 kills) and sophomore Brittany Hayes (Mitchelleville, Md./Elizabeth Seton) (16 kills, 10 digs) each had ‘double-doubles’ with seven Rider players overall reaching double-digit dig totals. Also for Rider freshman Elyse Grassmuck (Seguin, Texas/La Vernia) had 43 assists and 19 digs.
