The Broncs lost a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game at Niagara Friday afternoon. Rider senior Michele Ripoll (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant Boro) scored from 35 yards out to cut the lead to 2-1 with 14 minutes left in the game, but that was as close as the Broncs could get. The goal was the first of Ripoll’s career, having missed all but one game in each of the last two seasons due to injuries. Niagara out-shot Rider 22-14, including 8-1 in the first 10 minutes of the game. Rider freshman goalkeeper Alex Post (Chalfont, Pa./Central Bucks West) made seven saves.

In the 2007-08 season opener the Broncs lost to the powerful UMBC squad Saturday. For the Rider women junior Amanda Burke (Churchville, PA/William Tennent) won both the 1-meter and the 3-meter (242.63) dives, setting a new Rider record in the 1-meter (274.87) while qualifying for the NCAA Zone meet. Junior Priscilla Modrov (Smithtown, NY/Hauppauge) set Coppola Pool records in the 100 butterfly (57.47) and the 200 butterfly (2:05.47), won the 200 individual medley (2:08.71) and swam on the winning 200 medley relay with freshman Carmen Menendez (Fairfax, VA/Oakton) and senior Stephanie Cosentino (Staten Island, NY/Notre Dame). Sophomore Kellyanne Tomasula (Sussex/Vernon Twp.) won the 100 back (58.12) and the 100 free (53.47), and swam on the winning 200 medley relay. Freshman Brianna Burns (Chestnut Ridge, NY/Spring Valley) placed second in the 50 free (25.18) For the Rider men senior Dylan Korn (Hawthorne, NY/Westlake) won both the 1-meter (285.10) and the 3-meter (287.41) dives. Freshman Drew Modrov (Smithtown, NY/Hauppauge) won the 50 free (21.62) and placed second in the 100 free (48.84) and swam on the winning 200 medley relay with sophomore Scott Player (Chino Hills, CA/Ruben S. Ayala) senior Matt Bauer (Lansdale, PA/North Penn) and senior Peter Starr (Boyertown, PA/Boyertown Area). Bauer also won the 100 breaststroke (1:01.63) and Starr placed second in the 100 backstroke (53.55).

The Broncs clinched the number two seed in the upcoming playoffs with a 3-1 Northeast Conference road win at Sacred Heart Sunday afternoon. Rider opened the scoring with freshman Allison Vogel (Oceanport, N.J./Shore Regional) hitting the back of the cage 11 minutes in and the Broncs scored again off a penalty corner one minute later when rookie Michaela Franey (York, Maine/York) scored off an assist from freshman Margaret Ecke (New Egypt, N.J./New Egypt). The Broncs led 2-0 at the half. After the Pioneers cut the lead to 2-1 with 25 minutes remaining, Bronc junior Tricia Crotty (Lewistown, Pa./Indian Valley) closed the scoring with 17 minutes left, notching her team-leading seventh goal of the season. Junior Diana Celebre (Lake Grove, N.Y./Sachem) and sophomore Erin McGinniss added the assists. Crotty’s 29 career goals are eighth best all-time at Rider. Rider senior goalie Jen LoCastro (Cherry Hill, N.J./Camden Catholic) made six saves as Sacred Heart out-shot Rider 15-11 and held an 8-5 penalty corner advantage.

Volleyball
Against FDU freshman Elyse Grassmuck (Seguin, Texas/La Vernia) had a ‘triple-double’ with 31 assists, 13 digs and 13 kills. Grassmuck also added four service aces. Also for Rider, freshman Katelyn Thompson (Tucson, Ariz./Catalina Foothills) (21 kills, 10 digs) and senior Katrina Stehle (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) (16 digs, 15 kills) each added a ‘double-double’. In the fifth and deciding game, Rider held a 10-7 lead before the Knights rallied to take the lead 12-11.. Rider tied the match at 12 and the teams traded points tying the game at 14, the seventh and final tie of the fifth game and the 26th tie in the overall match. Thompson had two kills for the Broncs to end the game 16-14 and give Rider the two-hour marathon win. Sophomore Brittany Hayes (Mitchelleville, Md./Elizabeth Seton) added 11 kills and five blocks for the Broncs.

The Broncs and Manhattan Jaspers tied in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game Sunday. It was the second consecutive game that Rider went into overtime. Freshman Jim Bradley (Sewell, N.J./Washington Township) picked up a loose ball and scored in the 29th minute following a corner kick to give Rider a 1-0 lead. For Bradley it was his third goal of the season. Freshman Tom Dunn (Westampton, N.J./Rancocas Valley) took a pass from sophomore Nico Tramontana (Vineland/Sacred Heart) and scored his first collegiate goal to give Rider a 2-0 lead just 1:34 into the second half. Manhattan got on the board with a penalty kick in the 58th minute and tied the score at 2-2 in the 64th minute on a header off of a corner kick Manhattan out-shot Rider 15-10 in regulation, 5-4 in overtime, and 20-14 for the game. Junior goalkeeper Randall Zapolski (Lawrence) made five saves. At Saint Peter’s Junior AJ Parillo (South River) took a pass from senior Lee Tomasso (Westfield) and scored just 5:20 into the game to give Rider a 1-0 lead. An ‘own goal’ by a Saint Peter’s defender tied the score at 2-2 and sophomore Kevin Juska (Wall) scored mid-way through the second half to give Rider a 3-2 lead. Parillo assisted on Juska’s goal.

Against Saint Francis junior Casey Jedlinski (Manalapan) won 7-5, 6-3 at first singles and teamed with freshman Josh Rultenberg (Lafayette Hill, Pa./Plymouth-Whitemarsh) to win at first doubles 8-2. Rultenberg won at second singles 6-1, 6-4. Sophomore Marc Ashed (Vineland) won at fourth singles 7-5, 6-3 and teamed with sophomore Will Haight (Turnersville, N.J./Washington Township) to win at second doubles 8-3.

The Rider men placed 17th of 20 and the Rider women were 25th of 25 teams at the high-powered Penn State National Invite Friday. For the Rider men, senior John Smith (Cliffwood Beach/Matawan) placed first for the Broncs, 53rd overall, covering the 5.2 mile course in 27:22. Freshman Christian Gonzalez (Somerset/Franklin Twp.) was 77th overall among the 222 runners in 27:45. For the Rider women, junior Kelly Wojciehowski (Fair Haven/Rumson Fair Haven) placed 119th among the 278 runners, covering the 6,000 meter course in 23:49. Junior Megan Crowe (Philadelphia, PA/St. Hubert’s) was 148th in 24:34.

Golf
After shooting a three-under par 69, Rider senior Tyler Brewington (Orangeville, Pa./Benton) made par on the second playoff hole to win the Mount St. Mary’s Fall Classic as the golf team competed this weekend at the par 72, 6,834 yard Quail Valley Golf Course. Brewington entered the day tied for 18th place out of 69 golfers. Brewington shot a 143 for the two-day tournament, defeating Sean Davey (Hofstra) who made par and bogey on his playoff holes. Rider shot a team score of 308 on Saturday for a 611 total finishing seventh of 13 teams, 19 shots behind host Mount St. Mary’s which shot a 590 (291-299). Brewington now has two first place, two second place and one third place individual finishes this fall and those efforts earned him the Rider Male Athlete of the Month award for September. Also for the Broncs, freshman Brent Wolgast (Bay City, Mich./Pendleton) shot a 78 for a 155 total tying for 29th. Sophomore Kevin Krecicki (Hamilton/Nottingham) shot an 81 and freshman Brian Accorsini (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) shot a 76, each totaling 157 for 37th. Junior Eric LeFante (Colts Neck) shot an 80 for a total of 164, finishing 58th.
