Rider at Mount St. Mary’s Fall Classic
8th of 13 after Day One
LITTLESTOWN, Pa.—The Rider men’s golf team is competing this weekend at the Mount St. Mary’s Fall Classic and after Friday’s opening round are tied for eighth place out of 13 teams at the par 72, 6,834 yard Quail Valley Golf Course. “We started off pretty good,” said head coach Bob Whartenby. “By the middle of the round I thought we were going to come in with some low scores and then it started raining and we made some mistakes coming in causing us to post a higher number.”
For the Broncs, senior Tyler Brewington (Orangeville, Pa./Benton) shot a 74 and is tied for 18th place out of 69 golfers.
Andrew Mason (Temple) and Sean Davy (Hofstra) and Mark MacKay (Ottawa) each shot a 71 and lead by one shot.
“I didn’t hit the ball bad today,” said Brewington. “I had a couple of three-puts which cost me some strokes. I just couldn’t get the ball in the hole very quickly. I had just changed my putting grip so my speed wasn’t where it should be because my feel is different than it was. My stroke is definitely better. I didn’t do anything ‘crazy bad’ but I didn’t shoot that well either.”
Rider shot a team score of 308 Friday and are 17 strokes behind host Mount St. Mary’s which shot a 291.
Also for the Broncs, sophomore Kevin Krecicki (Hamilton/Nottingham) shot a 76 and is tied for 28th, freshman Brent Wolgast (Bay City, Mich./Pendleton) shot a 77 and is tied for 31st, freshman Brian Accorsini (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) is tied for 53rd with an 81 and junior Eric LeFante (Colts Neck) shot an 84 and is tied for 61st.
“It was a combination of inexperience and the weather that contributed to the team score,” Whartenby added.
Playing unattached was sophomore Dan Toomey (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley Regional) who shot a 79 and is tied for 46th place.
“I bogeyed a hole late when it started raining pretty good,” Brewington remembered. “I did get lucky because we were waiting for a few groups in front of us to finish so by the time I played the last few holes, the weather let up and I was able to finish without being affected too much.”
“I think that Tyler kept it together at the end of the round when the weather changed,” Whartenby said. “He didn’t go any lower but he didn’t go any higher either so that kept him in the hunt for a good finish tomorrow.”
“I don’t think anyone will go real low in today’s results,” Brewington added. “I would be really surprised if anyone comes in below a 70 or 71. There are not too many shots to make up so I just have to go out and post a good round and see what happens. I made a good put on the last hole and I figured I would make this and salvage the round and give myself the opportunity to see what happens on Saturday. That was real clutch for me to make that last putt.”
The fall season concludes with the 18 hole final round on Saturday.
