October 4, 2007 - Brewington / Musumeci Rider Athletes of the Month (September)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Brewington, Musumeci Rider Athletes of Month

LAWRENCEVILLE—Tyler Brewington of the golf team and Lauren Musumeci of the soccer team were named the Rider University Athletes of the Month for all competition in September. “It is very exciting, very surprising,” Musumeci said. “My first month at Rider has been amazing.”  “We have a lot of great athletes at Rider so getting this award is a great honor,” Brewington said.

Brewington, a senior from Orangeville, Pa. (Benton High School) placed in the top four in all four of his tournaments in September, including medalist honors at St. Bonaventure’s Leo Keenan Invitational.

“To be honest, if he works on his short game a little more I think he’ll be out there on the PGA Tour (Professional Golfers Association) one day, that’s how well he hits the ball,” said Rider head coach Bob Whartenby.

Musumeci, a freshman from Annandale, N.J. (North Hunterdon High School), led Rider to a 3-3-3 month with a team-high four goals, including a pair of game-winners. “Our whole team has been doing amazing and everyone makes everyone else look good,” Musumeci said.

Musumeci scored her first two collegiate goals in a 2-0 victory over George Mason, and scored the game-winner in a 3-2 come-from-behind win over Saint Joseph’s. Her goal gave Rider a 2-0 lead in a 3-2 win over Longwood.

“It has been a little while since we have had an athlete of the month so it is exciting and shows that the program is doing well,” said Rider head soccer coach Kevin Long. “‘Moose’ is a good player who is making an impact right away in her young career.”

Brewington placed first of 74 golfers at St. Bonaventure, second of 85 golfers at Cornell, second of 84 golfers at Bucknell and third of 75 golfers at Colgate.  This fall Brewington has had three rounds of 69, two at 70, two at 71 and a 72.  This marks the second consecutive September that Brewington has won the Rider Athlete of the Month award.

Musumeci currently ranks second in the MAAC in game-winning goals, fourth in goals and goals per game and sixth in points.  “We graduated an outstanding class a few years ago, and we’ve seen some growth and now the program is back to where we want it to be, and ‘Moose’ is a shining example of that,” Long said. “We want to win an Athlete of the Month award every month we compete.”
