Rider’s Brewington 2nd of 85 at Cornell Big-Red Invite
Broncs 10th of 16 teams

ITHACA, N.Y.—Rider senior Tyler Brewington shot a final round 74 for a three-day total of 214 placing second of 85 golfers at the 16-team Cornell Big-Red Invite hosted at the par-72 Robert Trent Jones Course this weekend.  “Today was a tough day with swirling winds causing the course to play longer,” said head coach Bob Whartenby.  “The pins were tougher.  Overall we left a lot of shots our there.  Other than Tyler placing second, it was a disappointing weekend.  It shows we really need to work on our short game.”

Brewington (Orangeville, Pa./Benton) lost by two shots to Siena’s Dan Abbondandolo who scored a final round 69 at the 6,890 yard course.

“The Siena player birdied the last two out of three holes to post his 69,” said Whartenby.  “Tyler didn’t do anything to lose the tournament.  Siena’s kid just came in with a lower score.”

Brewington was coming off a win at the Leo Keenan Invitational last week after placing second at Bucknell and third at Colgate this fall.  Brewington was the medalist at this tournament as a junior with a 54-hole total of 215 after placing fifth in Ithaca as a sophomore and 10th as a rookie.

“The last nine I played, I scored a 39 which is three over,” said Brewington.  “I felt that the final nine holes what not what I needed to do to win the tournament.  I didn’t really hit the ball as well as I did yesterday.  I made a lot of putts on the front nine today and made some up and downs but it is hard to keep doing that.  Eventually not hitting well catches up to you.  I’m disappointed but it didn’t happen and I’ll do better in the next one.”

“It is tough defending the tournament title,” Whartenby added.  “It is tough to win a title in back to back seasons.  He did well and put forth a good effort.”

“I like this course,” Brewington added.  “I might have put some pressure on myself but I’ve been in pressure situations before.  I could have handled it differently.”

Also for the Broncs, junior Eric LeFante (Colts Neck, N.J./Colts Neck) shot a 76 and finished 48th with a 234.  Freshman Brent Wolgast (Bay City, Mich./Pendleton) shot a 78 (237 total) and finished tied for 58th with teammate, freshman Brian Accorsini (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) who also shot a 78.  Freshman Jordan Wycoff (Fort Washington, Pa./Saint Stephens Episcopal) shot a 78 and was 66th with a 239.

“As a team, we came back and played a better second round on Saturday and didn’t play too bad today.  We are all still learning.  I remember as a freshman that I wanted to do well for the team and not for myself individually and I think some of the younger players feel that pressure.  They want to support the older players and post a good team score and that puts some extra pressure on themselves.  I can relate to what they are going through.”

Rider finished tied for 10th with a total score of 917 after shooting a 306 Sunday.  Rider was the defending tournament champion having won twice in the last three seasons.  St. Bonaventure won with a score of 878, defeating Longwood which scored an 885.  The host Big Red shot an 889 to finish third with Bucknell (897) and Dartmouth (900) rounding out the top five.

The Broncs wrap up the fall season at the Mount St. Mary’s Fall Classic October 19-20.
