Rider’s Brewington 1st of 85 at Cornell Big-Red Invite after Day One
Broncs 11th of 16 teams

ITHACA, N.Y.—Rider senior Tyler Brewington leads the 85 golfer field by one shot after shooting a 140 on day one of the 16-team Cornell Big-Red Invite hosted at the par-72 Robert Trent Jones Course this weekend.  “I’m happy that for the most part we improved from the morning round,” said head coach Bob Whartenby after his team lowered their score by 17 shots in the afternoon round.  “We need to learn to get it going a little quicker especially when you are playing 36 holes.”

Brewington (Orangeville, Pa./Benton) scored a three-under par 69 and one-under par 71 at the 6,890 yard course to lead he field after 36 holes of action on Saturday.

“I played pretty good in the first round and I was able to roll some puts in,” Brewington said.  “In the afternoon, I didn’t hit the ball as well but I was able to scramble and made some nice up and downs.  I’m pretty pleased to get out of the day with those two scores.”

Brewington is coming off a win at the Leo Keenan Invitational last week after placing second at Bucknell and third at Colgate this fall.  Brewington was the medalist at this tournament as a junior with a 54-hole total of 215 after placing fifth in Ithaca as a sophomore and 10th as a rookie.

Rider is currently in 11th place with a total score of 611 (314 & 297) after winning the tournament twice in the last three seasons.  Longwood University leads the field with a 580 followed by St. Bonaventure (583) Cornell (586) and Bucknell (589).

“You have to find your grove mentally and stay focused much more than in an 18-hole situation,” Whartenby said.  “You want to take the second round and learn from your first round mistakes and take what was successful in the opening round and duplicate it the second time around.  It is very hard to do because it is such a long day.  Once you play the hole, you definitely take something from it the next time around.”

“It is a grind playing 36,” Brewington said.  “You have to take one hole at a time and if you make a mistake, you have 35 other holes to work with.  You just have to pace yourself physically and mentally.”

Also for the Broncs, junior Eric LeFante (Colts Neck, N.J./Colts Neck) shot a 158 and is in 57th place after scoring a 73 in the afternoon following an opening round of 85.  Freshman Brent Wolgast (Bay City, Mich./Pendleton) shot a 159 (86-73) and is tied for 64th with teammate, freshman Brian Accorsini (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) who had rounds of 79 and 80.  Freshman Jordan Wycoff (Fort Washington, Pa./Saint Stephens Episcopal) shot a 161 (81-80) and is 74th.

The final 18 holes are on Sunday.
