Men: 38th of 41 / Women: 44th of 47

BETHLEHEM, PA—The Rider men placed 38th of 41 teams and the Rider women were 44th of 47 at the 34th Brooks Paul Short Invitational, hosted by Lehigh University Friday. “Today's results were not indicative of the team that we have this year,” said Rider coach Bob Hamer. “We're capable of a lot more. We're a much better team than this, that's why this is so disappointing.”

For the Rider men, senior John Smith (Cliffwood Beach/Matawan) was 103rd among the 268 runners, covering the 8k course in 25:54.

For the Rider women, freshman Chelsea Callan (Hazlet/Raritan) placed first among the Broncs, 212th overall among the 314 runners, covering the 5k course in 23:52. “You can't beat many teams when your top runner is in the 200s,” Hamer said.

Also for the Rider men junior Matt Dahl (West Keansburg/Raritan) was 142nd  in 26:12, senior Jeff Stead (Fairless Hills, PA/Pennsbury) was 217th in 27:03 and sophomore Phil Capaldi (Woxall, Pa./Souderton) was 225th in 27:14. “Smith  and Matt were battling to do things,” Hamer said.

Also for the Rider women junior Kelly Wojciehowski (Fair Haven/Rumson Fair Haven) placed 232nd in 24:06, junior Megan Crowe (Philadelphia, PA/St. Hubert's) placed 247th in 24:21 and sophomore Kelsey Kohler (Southampton, Pa./Saint Basil's Academy) was 272nd in 24:52.

“The women did average at best,” Hamer said. “We got out okay but didn't run hard in the middle of the race, and that is where it got away from us.”

In all fairness, Rider did not have all of its top runners competing Friday. “We were down a couple kids today who weren't healthy,” Hamer said. “We were missing two of our top six men (Chris Gonzalez and Bob McCullough) and one of the top five women (Lauren Lester) with injuries, but that is no excuse. You can't not bring you ‘A’ game when you come to a meet of this caliber. Hopefully this was a wake-up call. We need to learn from this experience and get better.”

Rider runs at the Penn State Invitational October 12. “We need to get back to the drawing board and come back better than that or we aren't going to have a very successful season,” Hamer said.
