MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa.— You can’t lose if the other team doesn’t score. Rider senior goalie Jen LoCastro (Cherry Hill, N.J./Camden Catholic) collected her first career shutout, making six saves, to lead Rider to a Northeast Conference win at Robert Morris Friday. “Jen was outstanding,” said Rider head coach Lori Hussong. “She was the reason we were in the game today.”

Rider (5-4, 2-0 NEC) out-shot RMU (2-8, 0-3 NEC) 7-6, but the home team had 10 penalty corners to Rider’s one.

“Our defense played really good,” said LoCastro, who spent her first three years as the back-up goalie behind the all-time winningest goalie in Rider field hockey history, Krysta Bearish, before getting the opportunity to show what she can do this season.  “We got the shutout, so I think that shows we’re improving as a defense.”

Freshman Lindsay Rajeski (New Egypt) came in off the bench and scored her second goal in as many games. Rajeski, who scored her first collegiate goal against Temple on Tuesday, took a pass from senior Steph Walker (Lyman, Maine/Massabesic) and scored in the 20th minute of play.

“I think it was Crotty (junior Tricia Crotty of Lewistown, Pa./Indian Valley High) who crossed it to Steph Walker and she shot it toward the net and I tipped it in,” Rajeski remembered.

“We just inserted Lindsay into the game and within seconds she took a pass from Walk and scored,” Hussong said. “Lindsay is coming on. Each day she is getting better and better. She’s actually a defender who we converted into an offensive player because we have quite a few injuries on our front line. We needed somebody to fill in the gap for us and she’s done a great job, especially the last two games.”

“I was a defender in high school so I didn’t score very much,” said Rajeski, who earned All-State honors while leading New Egypt to the New Jersey State Group I championship as a junior. “It doesn’t matter to me where I play, wherever the team needs me,” added the three-time New Egypt Defensive Player of the Year.

This was the fourth meeting between these two teams, with Rider winning three. Rider won 5-0 last season. “We didn’t play our best today but we won the game,” said Hussong.

“As long as the defense is tough and they don’t score things are going good,” said LoCastro.

Rider plays at La Salle Sunday afternoon.
