Rider’s Antonucci MAAC Rookie of Week

LAWRENCEVILLE-- Tom Antonucci, a freshman on the Rider University soccer team, was named the co-winner of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week award for all games played September 17-23.

Antonucci (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks South) scored his first collegiate goal on a header from six yards out with 5:32 left in the first half for the game-winning goal in a 2-1 victory at George Washington University.

The goal came off of a pass from senior Lee Tomasso (Westfield) on a free kick. “We played a serve in from Lee, it was a set piece, one of their players deflected it and Tom Antonucci ran back and headed the ball into the net,” said Rider head coach Russ Fager. “It was a timely place to be and a good place to finish.”

“Lee hit the ball to the back post and I was being marked around the ‘pk’ area,” Antonucci said.  “I jumped backwards and headed it in while I was falling down. It was just a great ball by Lee.”

Antonucci has played in all seven games for the 3-4 Broncs, starting one.  At Central Bucks South High School he was a four-year starter and served as team captain as a senior. In 2006 he scored a team-high 11 goals in less than a full season due to an injury and earned First Team All-League honors for the second time.

Rider plays at New Jersey Institute of Technology Tuesday night.
