Rider’s Brewington 1st of 74 / Rider 1st of 14

OLEAN, N.Y.—Rider senior Tyler Brewington (Orangeville, Pa./Benton) shot a one under 69 on the par 70 6,308 yard St. Bonaventure course and leads the Leo Keenan Invitational by one shot after the opening round Sunday.  “In the beginning we were struggling,” said head coach Bob Whartenby.  “In the middle and the end of the round we really came on strong. We finished really strong, making a lot of birdies. That really saved the day.”

Overall, Rider is in first place out of 14 teams after shooting a 288.  The Broncs lead Duquesne University by one shot (289).

“In the beginning I thought we were going to post a terrible score, and we ended up posting our best score of the season,” Whartenby added.

Also for the Broncs, junior Eric LeFante (Colts Neck, N.J./Colts Neck) shot a 71 and is in fourth place, freshman Brent Wolgast (Bay City, Mich./Pendleton) scored a 72 and is in fifth place, freshman Brian Accorsini (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) shot a 76 (31st place) and sophomore Kevin Krecicki (Hamilton, N.J./Nottingham) shot an 84 and is 69th.

“Eric played phenomenal today,” said Whartenby.  “He struggled in the beginning but made four birdies on the back nine to finish with a 71, which is great playing. It was a great comeback.”

“It was a pretty rough start,” said LeFante.  “I had two bogies right away and was kind of down on myself. I tired to hang in there and ended up with three over in the front nine. I started making a couple putts on the back nine and made a few good shots. I ended up with two under in the back.  I didn’t play that well on this course last year. This was my best score on this course so far. I think there are lower rounds out there though. Tomorrow I think someone will shoot in the mid-60s. Maybe it could be me, I don’t know.”

The final round will be contested on Monday.
