Rider 2nd at Bucknell Invitational – Day One
Brewington 3rd
LEWISBURG, Pa.—The Broncs are competing this weekend at the 16-team Bucknell Invitational hosted by the Bison at par 70, 6,310 yard Bucknell Golf Club and are tied for second after day one with a team score of 584. “Our first round, we were all around par until the last four or five holes,” said head coach Bob Whartenby. “We gave up seven or eight shots at the end of the round but we rebounded and had a strong second round and we are in a good position heading into the final day.”
On Friday in the first two rounds, Rider senior Tyler Brewington (Orangeville, Pa./Benton) shot a 72 and 70 for a 142 and is in third place out of 84 golfers, three shots out of the lead.
“Our younger players did very well,” said Whartenby. “Kevin [Krecicki] who is only a sophomore lowered his score by five shots from the first round and was only one over par. All of the younger players stepped up and did well.”
Brewington won the 2006 Bucknell Invitational posting a three-round total of 211 helping Rider win the overall team title.
“You play year to year,” Whartenby added. “We didn’t really have any added pressure being the defending champion because we only have two players back from the 2006 team that won it. Each team is a little different. Bucknell has the real pressure hosting the tournament because they haven’t won it since 2003.”
The Broncs posted scores of 295 and 289 in the first two rounds and trail the Bison by 19 shots.
Also for the Broncs, sophomore Kevin Krecicki (Hamilton, N.J./Nottingham) shot a 146 (75-71) and is 14th, junior Eric LeFante (Colts Neck, N.J./Colts Neck) shot a 149 (74-75) and is 26th, freshman Jordan Wycoff (Fort Washington, Pa./Saint Stephens Episcopal) shot a 150 (74-76) and is in tied for 28th place with freshman Brent Wolgast (Bay City, Mich./Pendleton) also coming in with a 150 (77-73).
“I listened to Jordan [Wycoff] during my rounds and he told me to concentrate on hitting the fairways and greens,” Krecicki remembered. “That helped a lot and I tried not to scramble the last few holes like I did in the first round. Coming back right away with another round helped because you remember the mistakes you made on certain holes and you also remember the shots that you were successful with in the morning.”
The final 18 holes will be on Saturday.
“We are going to try to keep doing the same things we are doing right now and if we do that, who knows what could happen tomorrow.”
“We want to play well and see what happens,” Krecicki added.
