GAINESVILLE, FLORIDA — Senior Jazmine Fenlator (Wayne/Wayne Valley) completed her outstanding Rider University career at the NCAA Regional Championships, hosted by the University of Florida Friday and Saturday in James G. Pressly Stadium at Percy Beard Track. “It is going to be strange going to meets without her,” said Rider head coach Rob Pasquariello. “She’s been the driving force for the women’s team for four years. We broke new ground with her, qualifying for big meets like this one. She had been paving the way.”
Fenlator, an eight-time All-East performer and the 2007 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championship Most Outstanding Performer, placed 12th in the hammer (52.62m or 172’8”) on Saturday, after placing 16th in the shot put (14.54m) on Friday.
In the discus Saturday night, Fenlator’s collegiate career came to an end with a toss of 47.34m to place 11th.
“Obviously I wanted Jazmine to qualify,” said Pasquariello. “Her throws weren’t bad, they were okay. For her to compete at this level she had to be on or near her personal best, and today she wasn’t. She’s thrown 50 meters.”
Fenlator set the MAAC record in the discus (48.62m) earlier this month, and also won the MAAC hammer. Fenlator entered the Regional ranked 37th in the nation in the discus. “If she had thrown what she did at the conference meet she would have reached the finals,” Pasquariello said.
On Friday, Rider sophomore Desmond Hamilton (Pennsauken) qualified for the NCAA National Track & Field Championships in the long jump. Hamilton placed fifth in the men’s long jump with a distance of 7.45m (24’5.5”).
“Des is really excited,” Pasquariello said. “He’ll be ready to go. He’s going to go out there and I know he’ll represent Rider really well. And hopefully come back as an All-American. If he jumps as well next week as he did at the IC4A he’ll be among the top four or five in the country. You never know how he’s going to react. It will be a whole new experience for him but I think he’s going to do fine. He has proven to be a big meet performer. The spotlight really doesn’t bother him. In all of the years that Rider has had track and field, he is only the second person to get to nationals.”
Also on Friday Rider sophomore Kelly Kajunski (Glenmore, Pa./Downington East) placed seventh in the women’s high jump at 1.76m (5’9.25”) to become Rider’s first woman All-Regional place winner.
