Rashana Barnes was named the new assistant coach of the Rider University women’s basketball team on May 21, 2007.

A 2002 graduate of Penn State University, Barnes comes to Rider from Loyola University Chicago, where she served two years as an assistant coach.

“I am very excited to have Rashana join our staff at Rider,” said head coach Lynn Milligan, who returned to her alma mater last month as Rider’s 19th women’s basketball head coach.  “She has a great enthusiasm and love for the game. Rashana is a competitor and a proven winner who will teach our student-athletes how to succeed.”

At Loyola, Barnes was primarily responsible for the Ramblers' post players in addition to recruiting and game preparation responsibilities.

Barnes served for two seasons as the Director of Basketball Operations at Saint Joseph's University. “Having worked with Rashana at Saint Joseph's I have seen first hand the positive effect she has on young people," Milligan said.

“I am truly excited to have the opportunity to return to the east coast and work with Lynn,” Barnes said.  “I’ve always admired her work ethic and energy. She has a pure passion for the game and a commitment to fully develop student-athletes.”

A four-year letterwinner at Penn State, Barnes broke the Nittany Lion 17-year freshman record for blocked shots and earned the Unsung Hero award as a sophomore. Barnes was named All-Big Ten her junior and senior years, ending her career third on the PSU all-time blocked shots list (189) while becoming just the 11th Nittany Lion to record 1,000 points and 700 rebounds in a career. The Los Angeles Sparks made her their third-round selection (48th overall) in the 2002 WNBA Draft.

Barnes is a 1998 graduate of West Catholic High School in Philadelphia.
