Rider Award Winners
LAWRENCEVILLE—The Rider University baseball team presented its team awards at the annual awards ceremony.
Sophomore catcher Sean Olson (Vineland/St. Augustine Prep) was presented with the Joe Plunkett Memorial Award as the team Most Valuable Player.
Sophomore pitcher Mike Petrowski (Hamilton Square/Steinert) was named the Most Valuable Pitcher.
Junior centerfielder Jon Leise (Woodbury/West Deptford) was presented with the Peter F. Daly Award as the team’s Most Improved Player.
Olson, a first team All-State selection by the New Jersey Collegiate Baseball Association, led the Broncs in batting average (.315), slugging percentage (.489), hits (58), RBI (42), doubles (12), home runs (6) and total bases (90).
Petrowski led Rider in earned run average (4.03), wins (5), innings pitched (80.1) and strike outs (57). The 6’4” right hander struck out 12 Fairfield batters and earned victories over East Tennessee State, Washington State, Saint Joseph’s, Canisius, and Niagara. He also struck out seven LeMoyne batters but did not receive the decision in a 2-1 MAAC victory.
Leise started 48 games in centerfield after making just eight starts in 2006, and batted .251, collecting 44 hits, 34 more hits than last season. This year Leise was third on the team in RBI (25) and home runs (4), fourth in slugging percentage (.366), total bases (64) and runs scored (27) and fifth in hits.
