NIAGARA FALLS, NY—The Broncs swept Niagara in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader at Sal Maglie Stadium Saturday evening. The sweep puts Rider (19-25, 11-11 MAAC) in a tie for fourth place with Marist. “We overcame a lot of things today, making errors and leaving runners on base, but we did what we had to do,” said Rider head coach Barry Davis.
In the first game, Rider scored two runs in the seventh inning, one on an RBI single by sophomore Mo Williams (Tinton Falls/Monmouth Regional) to break a 3-3 tie. “Mo had a big hit for us,” Davis said. “The first game was nip and tuck. We got some clutch hits.”
Rider scored two more runs in the eighth inning on a single by sophomore Adam Tussey (Brooklawn/Gloucester) to take a 7-3 lead.
Sophomore pitcher Mike Petrowski (Hamilton Square/Steinert) allowed just one earned run in seven innings of work to pick up his team-high fifth win of the season. “Petrowski threw well,” Davis said.
Rider trailed 2-0 before scoring three runs in the fourth inning when Williams and freshman Eric Woodrow (Hamilton, N.J./Hamilton West) hit sacrifice flies and junior Jon Leise (Woodbury/West Deptford) hit an RBI single to take a 3-2 lead.
In the second game, Rider sophomore pitcher Jimmer Kennedy (Levittown, PA/Holy Ghost Prep) struck out eight in six innings, allowing just one earned run. “Kennedy was mowing them down,” Davis said. “He was pretty sharp.”
Sophomore Jamie Hayes (Sunrise, Fla./Piper) pitched to just three batters in the seventh inning, striking out two, for his 11th save of the season.
Rider broke a 2-2 tie with three runs in the fifth inning, keyed by another RBI single by Williams, to take a 5-2 lead. Williams had three hits and three RBI in the doubleheader.
An RBI single by Tussey in the top of the seventh inning gave Rider a 6-4 lead.
Sophomore Sean Olson (Vineland/St. Augustine Prep) went three for three in the second game and had four hits in the doubleheader.
The third game of the series will be played Sunday at 1:00 pm. “Tomorrow we can solidify the weekend,” Davis said. “All we can do now is win as many games as we can.”
