LAWRENCEVILLE—The Broncs lost to Saint Joseph’s Tuesday. The Hawks (9-34) collected 16 hits against four Rider pitchers. “It’s just disappointing,” said Rider head coach Barry Davis. “Not much good happened for us today. No excuses. Exams are over.”
For Rider (16-25), red-shirt freshman Matt McCollum (Tabernacle/Shawnee) and sophomore Jamie Hayes (Sunrise, Fla./Piper) each had three of Rider’s nine hits. “Matt and Jamie swung the bat decent today,” Davis said.
Hayes had a double, his team-high tenth of the year, and now has 47 hits in 41 games this season.
McCollum now has 11 hits in his last five games.
SJU took a 1-0 lead in the first inning with a two-out home run by Ben Wendle, who had four of Saint Joe’s 16 hits. It was Wendle’s team-high sixth home run of the season.
The Broncs tied the score at 1-1 in the second inning when Hayes singled and scored on a sacrifice fly by freshman Eric Woodrow (Hamilton, N.J./Hamilton West).
It was all Saint Joe’s after that, as the Hawks scored five runs in the fourth inning and five runs in the seventh inning.
Rider hosts Temple Wednesday at 3:30 pm before traveling to Niagara for a three-game Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference series beginning with a doubleheader Saturday at 4:00 pm. “Luckily, we get to come back tomorrow and see how we respond,” Davis said. “We’ll see what kind of attitude we bring to the table tomorrow.”
