BRONX, NY—The Broncs split a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader with Manhattan held at Fordham University Saturday. “We played with more intensity today than we have been,” said Rider head coach Tricia Carroll. “We were hitting the ball hard all day.”

For Rider, junior Tiffany Day-Neutill (Agoura Hills, Calif./Oaks Christian) had six hits on the day. “Tiff always has a big day,” Carroll said. “She’s trying to carry the team herself. She’s seeing the ball real well and she’s pretty smart about when to bunt, when to hit.”

In the first game, Rider scored three runs in the ninth inning to break a 4-4 tie, as senior Ashley Boulden (Brooklawn/Gloucester) and Day-Neutill hit RBI doubles. Freshman Candice Harris (Las Vegas, Nev./Coronado) led off the ninth inning with a double and scored the eventual winning run. “There was a lot of good stuff today,” Carroll said.

Junior Jessica Holland (Hatboro, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) pitched all nine innings for the Broncs, collecting her third win of the season and the seventh of her career. “Jess pitched great,” Carroll said. “She’s getting better every game. She almost always pitches well enough to keep us in the game, she just doesn’t always get the offensive or defensive support behind her. Today she did.”

Day-Neutill homered in the fifth inning, her first of the season and the seventh of her career, to give Rider a 4-1 lead.

In the second game, freshman Amber Affholter (Trenton, MI/Southgate-Anderson) hit a grand slam home run in the fifth inning to give Rider a 6-5 lead. “Amber just started playing two weeks ago due to an injury and hasn’t had a ton of at bats,” Carroll said, “but she hit a shot.”

Rider plays a MAAC doubleheader at Saint Peter's Sunday. “Saint Peter’s is a good offensive team,” Carroll said, “but they are beatable. They score a lot of runs but they have been giving up a lot of runs as well. They got off to a good start in the conference.”
