LAWRENCEVILLE—The Broncs were swept in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader Sunday afternoon. “I’m disappointed and frustrated,” said head coach Tricia Carroll. “We just didn’t compete today.”
In game one for Rider (6-26, 1-7 MAAC), junior Jessica Holland (Hatboro, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) allowed only two earned runs in a complete game effort, recording eight strikeouts.
“Jess pitched well against a good, solid hitting team and we didn’t do anything to help her,” said Carroll who saw the Broncs make five errors on the day, including four in game one. “You can’t give any team extra outs and Canisius hits the ball so well, you especially can’t give them extra at-bats. They made us pay for every mental and physical error that we made.”
Canisius (19-18, 7-3 MAAC), senior Courtney Piar picked up her eighth win of the season, throwing six innings of two-hit ball with junior Katie Miranto adding a home run. Miranto had two hits and three RBI in the opener.
In game two, Bronc senior Desiree Harbaugh (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) went two for three with an RBI but it wasn’t enough as the Golden Griffins scored in every inning with Miranto going four for four with four RBI and two home runs.
Miranto now has seven home runs on the season and had six hits and seven RBI in the doubleheader.
“There is a reason Miranto is the conference pre-season Player of the Year,” said Carroll. “She can hit and we tried to keep her off balance. She made adjustments at the plate like any good hitter should do and had a good day. We didn’t do a very good job of keeping runners off base around her so she was up a lot with runners on base and she burned us every time we extended an inning with our defense not making plays.”
Junior Lindsay Garbacz threw five innings, allowing only two hits with five strikeouts for Canisius.
Rider travels to Philadelphia, Pa., on Tuesday to take on Temple in a single game at 3:00pm.
“Overall the effort wasn’t good,” Carroll added. “We didn’t keep our poise and that’s been one of the big issues so far this season. We have three non-conference games this week to work these things out before we play Manhattan and Saint Peter’s in conference games next weekend.”
