TROY, N.Y.—The Broncs were swept in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader Saturday. “I’m frustrated with the way we played,” said head coach Tricia Carroll. “We made physical errors, mental errors and we certainly didn’t pitch very well.”
For Rider (5-21, 0-2 MAAC), senior Ashley Boulden (Brooklawn, N.J./Gloucester) had four hits on the day with junior Tiffany Day-Neutill (Agoura Hills, Calif./Oaks Christian) adding six RBI in the second game.
In the opener, down 2-0 in the fifth inning, Boulden hit a two-run home run to left field to tie the score at two. Siena bounced back with a run in the fifth and two in the sixth for the final score.
“We left eight on base in the first game,” Carroll said. “We had ample opportunities and we did not take advantage of them. I didn’t think Jess [junior Jessica Holland Hatboro, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham)] pitched that bad at all. We just didn’t score for her.” Holland went the first four innings for the Broncs before freshman Laura Magliozzi (Granger, Ind./John Adams) pitched the final two in relief.
In the second game, the Broncs spotted the Saints a 9-0 lead and were down 12-2 before scoring four in the fifth and sixth innings and platted one in the seventh before the Saints were able to close out the game.
Boulden doubled with Day-Neutill hit her first two home runs of the season. Day-Neutill had three hits in game two with Boulden, freshman Derrin Minunni (Cohoes, N.Y./Shaker), sophomore Katy Mills (Seattle, Wash./Mount Rainier), freshman Candice Harris (Las Vegas, Nev./Coronado) and junior Aimee Schiller (Moreno Valley, Calif./Moreno Valley) each adding two hits.
“Katy and Tiffany both hit the ball hard even when they made outs,” Carroll added.
“I’m not happy that we got down by 10 runs in the second game,” said Carroll. “With that said, I am pleased that we fought back and battled. Siena was trying to just get three outs and we just started scoring and hitting the ball like we know how to. Pitching wise, this is Division I softball and our pitchers HAVE to understand that if you throw the ball in the middle of the plate and it’s up, our opponents are going to hit it. Not only hit it but crush it and Siena did just that in the second game.”
In anticipation of inclement weather on Sunday, the MAAC doubleheader at Marist has been postponed and no makeup date has been announced.
“We’re into the conference schedule now and we have to play better,” said Carroll. “Our opponents are going to bring their ‘A’ game and we have to match that effort, both physically and mentally.”
