Rider Quad Outdoor Invitational
LAWRENCEVILLE—Both the Rider men’s and women’s track & field teams placed third of seven teams in the Rider Quad Outdoor Invitational on Saturday. “Everything went well today,” said head coach Rob Pasquariello. “We took advantage of a tremendous opportunity to run at home in familiar surroundings in live competition before the conference championships that we are hosting in two weeks.”
For the women’s team, senior Katie O’Connor (Forked River, N.J./Lacey Twp.) tied the Rider record in the high jump and qualified for ECAC’s with a mark of 5’7”. Sophomore Tabatha Haskins (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) broke the Rider record in the 100m hurdles (15.06), placing second. Haskins was also third in the high jump (5’5”).
Sophomore Megan Crowe (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert's) won the 3000m steeplechase (12:35.73) with junior Elizabeth Clatch (Drums, Pa./Hazelton Area) winning the javelin with an ECAC qualifying throw of 131’11”.
“We were able to get a taste of what MAAC’s will be like,” Pasquariello added. “We were able to rest some of the athletes who were a little nicked up and we had others step up today and show that they will be able to get us points in the conference championships. Freshman Alicia Price (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern) posted a ‘PR’ in the hammer by over 20 feet, we tied or set two Rider records and Liz (Elizabeth Clatch) qualified for ECAC’s in the javelin. We had a strong day on the women’s side.”
For the men’s team, junior Andre Fearon (Newark, N.J./St. Benedict's Prep) won the 800m (1:52.69) with senior David Payne (Neptune, N.J./Neptune) winning the 100m in an IC4A qualifying time of 10.69. Payne was also second in the 200m (21.77).
Senior Doug Beck (Branchburg, N.J./Somerville) placed second in the discus with an IC4A qualifying throw of 159’11” with sophomore Desmond Hamilton (Pennsauken, N.J./Pennsauken) placing second in the 100m (10.86) and third in the 200m (22.18).
“The men’s team had a solid workman like performance,” said Pasquariello. “The usual athletes did well and again, we had some of the younger team members step up and show us that we will have the depth we will need to make a run at a MAAC title. Today was more of having the team peak at the right time and with the Duke Invitational last week and Princeton’s Larry Ellis and the Penn Replays next week, this was a good week for everyone to work on some things and make minor adjustments to their technique.”
Also for the women’s team, junior Rebecca Clatch (Drums, Pa./Hazelton Area) was second in the javelin (130’8”), freshman Dominique Carnevale (Oceanport, N.J./Shore Regional) was third in the 5000m (19:33.27) and freshman Karlise Cureton (Harrisburg, Pa./Susquehanna Twp.) was third in the 100m hurdles (15.50) and 200m (26.43).
“Even though we were saving people for next week and MAAC’s, overall the teams did well,” said senior Political Science major Allyson Angelo (Brick, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) who placed fourth in the pole vault. “We wanted to simulate what the conference meet was going to be like and try some techniques that would drop our times further and gain us more distance in the field events and I think we were successful doing that.”
Also for the men’s team, junior Paul Matuszak (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) was second in the 1500m (4:02.23), freshman Phillip Capaldi (Woxsall, Pa./Souderton) was second in the 3000m steeple chase (11:08.94), senior Danny Enck (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) was second in the hammer (161’6”). Freshman Kevin Breen (Langhorne, Pa./Archbishop
Ryan) was third in the pole vault (13’11.25”) and junior John Smith (Cliffwood Beach, N.J./Matawan) was third in the 1500m (4:03.00).
The Broncs compete at Princeton’s Larry Ellis Invitational April 21 followed by the Penn Relays before hosting the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championships the first weekend in May.
“Being at home was great,” Angelo added. “The crowd has big and a lot of the parents and students got to see us perform and that’s how it will be at MAAC’s so overall we had a good day of physical and mental preparation for the conference championships. We train here everyday but you can’t simulate the emotions of a live meet so this worked out well for everyone.”
