Rider at Duke’s Asics Invitational – Day Two

DURHAM, N.C.—A college sports team.  Like a good family, you rely on the older siblings to lead the way.  And when the young ones come into their own because of that leadership, then the proud parents (or in this case coaches) can sit back and smile.  Rider competed this past weekend at the Duke Invitational against some of the top competition on the East Coast and not only won a few events, helped put Rider track and field on the map.  “We had some really big-time mature performances,” said head coach Rob Pasquariello.  Our upperclassmen led the way but our underclassmen really turned some heads and helped show that Rider track belongs in this type of meet.”

For the women’s team, senior Jazmine Fenlator (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) set a Rider record in the discus with an NCAA Regional qualifying throw of 164’7”, placing second only to All-American Jocelyn White from North Carolina.  “That was a huge accomplishment for Jazmine,” said Pasquariello.  Fenlator also won the shot put with an ECAC qualifying throw of 46’10”.  “To get a win and finish runner-up to an All-American performer, this was a really special weekend for Jazmine and we still think her best is yet to come with MAAC’s, ECAC’s and now NCAA’s in her future plans.”

Junior Rebecca Clatch (Drums, Pa./Hazelton Area) placed fourth in the javelin with a throw of 141’4”, setting a Rider team record.

For the men’s team, senior Doug Beck (Branchburg, N.J./Somerville) won the discus with an IC4A qualifying throw of 162’2” and also placed 15th in the shot put (45’10.75”).  “Doug kind of flies under the radar,” said Pasquariello.  “He works very hard and lets his performances do the talking.  He has been a solid performer for us for the last four years and it is a real confidence builder for our team that they know Doug will get the key throw and score points for the team every time out.”

Senior David Payne (Neptune, N.J./Neptune) won the 100-meter dash (10.78) to qualify for IC4A’s.  “David is David,” said Pasquariello.  “We can count on him to give us a top performance each time and helping to lead the younger runners to improve their times as well.”

Also for the men’s team, junior Andre Fearon (Newark, N.J./St. Benedict's Prep) was sixth in the 800m (1:54.45), senior Danny Enck (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) was 13th in the shot put (46’5.50”), junior Jeff Stead (Fairless Hills, Pa./Pennsbury) was 32nd in the 800m (1:58.12) and sophomore Matt Dahl (West Keansburg, N.J./Raritan) was 35th in the 800m (1:59.33).

Also for the women’s team, freshman Alicia Price (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern) was 14th in the shot put (41’4.50”), junior Elizabeth Clatch (Drums, Pa./Hazelton Area) was 15th in the javelin (121’9”), freshman Karlise Cureton (Harrisburg, Pa./Susquehanna Twp.) was 19th in the 100m hurdles (15.43), sophomore Tabatha Haskins (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) was 24th in the 100m hurdles (15.55) and 26th in the long jump (26’7”), freshman Lauren Lester (Schenectady, N.Y./Mohanosen) was 28th in the 800m (2:25.66), senior Katie O’Connor was 36th in the 100m hurdles (16.30), freshman Kelly Disinger (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield) was 53rd in the 800m (2:28.87) with sophomore Tricia Crotty (Lewistown, Pa./Indian Valley) finishing 54th in the 100m (13.58).

The women’s 4x400 team placed 15th with a time of 4:07.92.

The Broncs host the Rider Invitational on Saturday, April 14.

“We had some great performances in the meet,” Pasquariello added.  “We had nine top seven finishes over the two days and it wasn’t all about the usual top performers for us [Jaz and Dave Payne and Doug Beck].  It was about their teammates as well who put up some big time performances.  We wanted Rider to get noticed and a lot of people came away from the meet knowing what Rider Track and Field is all about.  Exposure for the program and the freshman and sophomores stepping up with some solid performances against top competition, this was a weekend of growth for the Rider program.”
