College Track & Field
Rider at Duke’s Asics Invitational

DURHAM, N.C.—The Rider track and field teams are competing this weekend at the Duke Asics Invitational.  “I thought some of the kids took real advantage today of the good weather, the top competition and made themselves better with their performances,” said head coach Rob Pasquariello.

On Friday for the women’s team, senior Jazmine Fenlator (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) was fifth in the hammer with an ECAC qualifying throw of 170’2”.

“Today was one of the more consistent meets of Jazmine’s career in the hammer,” said Pasquariello.  “All four of her throws were over 170 feet.  She found a way to get into the top six and that was very impressive.”

For the men’s team, junior Andrew Dagenais (Glen Rock, N.J./Glen Rock) was the top collegiate finisher in the javelin throwing an IC4A qualifying distance of 195’9” with senior Danny Enck (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) placing sixth in the hammer throw with a distance of 167’6”.  “Andrew’s throw was unbelievable,” said Pasquariello.  “To place second and be the top collegiate finisher in this meet, in any event shows what kind of effort he made today and Danny is one of those kids that has a passion for what he does and he loves to throw the hammer.  It shows in his work ethic and performances.  He is still waiting for that big throw but we think it’s a matter of time for him.  As the meets get more important, his throws reflect that and we expect that he will continue to get longer distances as we head into the conference championships a month from now.  Nothing really bothers him; he just goes out there and does his job.”

“The competition down here is really deep,” said Pasquariello.  “To place in the top eight in this type of meet really says a lot about the type of athletes that we have and the type of athletes that we are getting in the track program at Rider.”

Also for the men's team, junior John Smith (Cliffwood Beach, N.J./Matawan) posted an IC4A qualifying time in the 10,000m finishing 15th (30:54.06).

Also for the women’s team, sophomore Tabatha Haskins (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) placed 10th in the triple jump (36’7.50”), freshman Lauren Lester (Schenectady, N.Y./Mohanosen) was 12th in the 1,500m (4:51.88), senior Laura Carpenter (Englishtown, N.J./St. John Vianney) was 14th in the 10,000m, freshman Karlise Cureton (Harrisburg, Pa./Susquehanna Twp.) was 15th in the 200m (26.52) and senior Katie O’Connor (Forked River, N.J./Lacey Twp.) was 17th in the high jump (5’5”).

“With that core group of kids on both the women’s and men’s teams, we have that group that are Eastern and border line National level and the other kids train with them everyday and see that they can also compete and put up those times and make those throws,” said Pasquariello.  “As the teams push each other to achieve more, you will start to see some of the other athletes on both sides put up some very good marks and we are going to need all of that depth in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference championships.  Coming to a meet like this one shows that we can compete with anyone and hold our own and for the teams, this weekend is a big confidence booster.”

Junior Paul Matuszak (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) was 29th in the 10,000m (32:07.51), sophomore Matt Dahl (West Keansburg, N.J./Raritan) was 30th in the 1,500m (3:57.88), junior Andre Fearon (Newark, N.J./St. Benedict's Prep) was 36th in the 1,500m (3:59.55), junior Jeff Stead (Fairless Hills, Pa./Pennsbury) finished 47th in the 1,500m (4:02.84), freshman Phil Capaldi (Woxsall, Pa./Souderton) was 138th in the 5,000m (16:15.46) and freshman Robert McCullough (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./La Salle) placed 140th in the 5,000m (16:22.63).

Senior Katie Chin (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) was 32nd in the 400m (1:03.33), sophomore Tricia Crotty (Lewistown, Pa./Indian Valley) was 33rd in the 200m (27.51), sophomore Ashley Maynard (Pen Argyl, Pa./Pen Argyl) was 34th in the 400m (1:03.75), freshman Jennifer Crogham (Nutley, N.J./Mt. St. Dominic) was 37th in the 1,500m (5:01.62), sophomore Megan Crowe (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert's) was 40th in the 1,500m (5:04.54) and freshman Kelsey Kohler (Southampton, Pa./St. Basil's Acad.) was 57th in the 5,000m (18:33.13).
