Internship and Co-op Information
Our Accounting Internship and Co-op program provide you with an opportunity to apply what you have learned in your accounting and business classes to a ‘real-life’ setting and to add a valuable aspect to your education experience. We have internship and co-op opportunities with many different public accounting firms and corporations, as well as with the state government.
The department encourage students to intern or co-op at least once during the undergraduate program. An internship is typically a summer experience and a co-op is a more intense, commitment worked during the junior year or during the Master of Accountancy program. Many employers use the internship co-op program as a first step as a means to hire full-time employees.
For the 2008 spring semester co-op our students worked at firms including:
Deloitte & Touche
Ernst & Young
KPMG
PricewaterhouseCoopers
Amper Politzer & Mattia
Bartolomei & Pucciarelli
Mercadian
Wilken & Guttenplan
Withum, Smith & Brown
Johnson & Johnson
Investigation Unit IRS
What are the requirements to participate in the Internship and Co-op Program?
The Internship Program is open to sophomore, junior, and senior accounting majors and Master of Accountancy (MAcc) students with a 3.0 Accounting GPA or better at the beginning of the internship semester.
Undergraduate accounting majors must have completed ACC 210, ACC 220 and ACC 310. Many times firms also have developed "leadership" activities for sophomores and the ACC 310 requirement is waived. The sophomore programs can be quite beneficial and can lead to internship opportunities at later times.
MAcc students are eligible for internship opportunities upon acceptance into the graduate program. All internships must be approved by the internship director in advance.
Can I earn academic credit for an approved accounting internship or co-op?
You can earn three academic credits for an approved internship and the co-op is a 15 credit program worked durig the second semester of junior year.
You may work as an intern during the summer or winter break and complete the required paper during the fall or spring semester. This allows you to register for the internship course credits during the regular semester (if the internship results in 18 credits for the semester you are billed for one extra credit). You also have the option to arrange to work an internship during the semester but you must meet with the Director of the Accounting Internship Program to plan for this. Under certain circumstances, it may be possible to add an additional three credits of independent study that can be linked to the internship experience. MAcc students may fulfill three credits of accounting at the graduate level with an approved internship.
Internship and co-op credits can be used as a free elective or a business elective.
How do I participate in the Internship Program?
There are information meetings for internships and co-ops at the start of each semester. Information about the time and place of the meeting is emailed to all accounting majors and announced in accounting classes. Program requirements, job availability, resume and mock interview workshop dates are announced at the meeting.
Co-op Program: Applications for co-op positions are distributed at the meeting and placements are handled by Anne Mandel, the Director of CBA Career Services.
Summer Internships: Use Career Service’s MonsterTrak system to apply for summer internship positions. Mrs. Nancy Silvester in Career Services can assist you with getting registered on MonsterTrak.
Based on the applications posted on MonsterTrak and, sometimes, through calls directly to the Director of the Internship Program, potential employers contact a number of students for interviews and following the interviews, extend offers to selected students. Thus, it is important to practice your interviewing skills with Anne Mandel in CBA Career Placement (SWG 253) prior to meeting with recruiters. If you accept an internship or co-op offer, make an appointment with Dr. O’Reilly-Allen to complete paperwork and the registration for the 3-credit internship course.
Toward the end of the internship, you are required to file a report of your internship experience. The report should be 8-10 pages in length, typed, double-spaced, and include a title page. The title page should include your name, telephone number, e-mail address, the place of employment, and your supervisor's name and address. The report will be tailored to focus upon your learning experience including your duties as an intern, what you learned and how what you learned in your internship can be related to a course or courses you have taken in your program. The specific format of the report will be provided to you prior to your actual experience so that you will be better able to appreciate your field experience.
