Dr. Hess specializes in creative writing, particularly creative nonfiction, as well as compositon studies and popular culture. His stories, essays, and critical articles have been published in journals and magazines ranging from Punk Planet and McSweeney's to Critical Studies in Media Communication. He is the author of the memoir Big Wheel at the Cracker Factory and the editor of Greenwood Press'  Icons of Hip-hop: A History of the Music, from Kool Herc to Kanye West.
