Healthcare and Insurance
EMERGENCIES
call extension 7777 or 911 and ask for an ambulance. Tell the operator where you are and the kind of problem you have. If possible, have a friend wait outside to guide the paramedics to you when the ambulance arrives. Take your insurance information with you to the hospital.
COUNSELING
Sometimes, it is not easy to integrate yourself into your host culture and its academic year. Serious personal stress often results in mediocre grades. Poor academic performance, particularly in the beginning, is often an outward sign of hidden and deeper problems.
The Counseling Center staff is trained to provide assistance with difficult academic or personal situations. Americans attach no stigma to seeking outside psychological help or therapy when needed.
HEALTH INSURANCE
Unlike many other countries, the United States does not offer a national system of health care. Health insurance is available through many private corporations. The State of New Jersey requires that all college students, or any other student who resides in the residence halls, be covered by the Rider University Accident and Health Insurance policy. As part of the registration and billing process in September, students will be charged a fee for medical coverage. International students must pay an additional fee for repatriation coverage.
Rider’s health insurance policy is designed to supplement the health services available to students. Rider has an Infirmary located in Poyda Residence Hall on the Lawrenceville campus and in Taylor Hall on the Westminster campus. The services are free to all students, and many health conditions can be treated there by a medical doctor on staff or the nurses. Serious cases are referred or transferred to a specialist or hospital; in that case, the student has to pay for treatment.
