ACCESS TO COLLECTIONS

POLICY FOR RIDERANA

Archival access generally is defined as the right or authority to obtain information from or perform research using archival materials. (Hunter, 179) Access to particular items may be restricted for content, preservation, or security reasons. For example, the physical condition of the items or their market value may lead to restrictions on use within the archival facility. Various collections will have different levels of access.

Rider University Archives and Special Collections serve members of the Rider community and others interested in the collection. The policies below have been established to provide access even as the work of organizing and preserving the Riderana collections proceeds.

  1. Materials in the Archives and Special Collections area (Riderana) are available for use solely in Riderana and do not circulate. Apply to the University Archivist for information and assistance with collections that are "in process" or have other restrictions.

  2. Access is by appointment only. User access is available only while the University Archivist, the Archival Manager, designated librarians, or designated Riderana student workers are in Riderana with the user. Please call or write to the University Archivist (609-895-5729) or the Archival Manager (609- 896-5000 x7094) to schedule a visit.

  3. First time users must fill out a "User Registration and Request" form and have a photo ID; users must sign in each time they come to the archives.

  4. While not all materials are cataloged, certain uncataloged materials have guides available through the Online Public Access Catalog and the Archives and Special Collections web page. Certain non-cataloged items will have a user's guide or finding aid available in Riderana.

  5. Photocopies may be made at the discretion and with the permission of the University Archivist or designated librarian. Conservation concerns, however, dictate that duplication is inappropriate for some types of material. Photocopying may be denied due to condition of the item, copyright restrictions, restrictions on use of the material, or availability of resources. Photocopying is done by the archives staff. There is a fee for this service.
