School Counseling Concentration

Designed to prepare school counselors for secondary and elementary schools, this program specifically has been approved for certification by the New Jersey State Board of Education and meets the certification requirement in most other states, including Pennsylvania and New York.  The program's emphasis is on developmental counseling.

Group 1:  Core Courses (24 credits)

  • COUN 503:  Group Counseling
  • COUN 505:  Vocational/Career Development
  • COUN 530:  Legal and Ethical Issues in Counseling or Psychotherapy
  • CNPY 514:  Psychopathology
  • EDPS 503:  Human Growth and Development
  • COUN 580 Elementary school Counseling Practicum

Group 1:  Practica and Internships (9 credits)

  • COUN 580:  Elementary School Counseling Practicum or
  • COUN 581:  Secondary School Counseling Practicum
  • COUN 590:  Internship in Counseling Services I
  • COUN 591:  Internship in Counseling Services II


Group 2:  Research and Assessment (6 credits)

  • EDPS 520:  Measurements, Tests, and Assessments in Counseling
  • EDUC 500:  Introduction to Research


Group 3:  Foundations (6 credits)

  • EDSO 501:  Community Agencies
  • EDSO 510:  Sociological and Cultural Foundations of Education


Group 4: Electives (3 credits)

One 3-credit elective must be taken.  This elective is to be taken with permission of the program advisor.  No elective can be taken prior to the completion of COUN 500 without permission from a program advisor.  (Note:  Some electives may have prerequisites.)
