Educational Specialist in Counseling Services

The Educational Specialist (Ed.S.) is an advanced degree beyond the Master level (M.A.) intended to provide candidates in depth training in a specialized area of counseling such as Career, Family Counseling Issues, Forensic Issues, Substance Abuse, Higher Education, School Counseling, Geriatrics, Special Population Issues, Specific subject areas such as Legal and Ethical dimensions of Counseling, etc.  The program is individualized to enable students to meet their career goals.

Rider University offers the Ed.S. program with a concentration in School Counseling or Community Counseling.

The Ed.S. degree will:

  • Enhance marketability of professional counselors in the competitive field of mental health services;
  • Provide advanced training for professional counselors in the expanding demands of their professional credentials;
  • Provide the opportunity for professional counselors to earn an advanced terminal degree while meeting the minimum 60-credit hours requirement for the New Jersey Licensed Professional Counselor Law.
  • Provide opportunities for those seeking a career change, specialization in a specific area, or broadening skill development.


The counselors-in-training are to develop a theory-based approach that is congruent with his/her unique personal qualities.  The theory developed is to include personal, cultural, social, vocational, psychological, and educational concerns.  There are two areas of concentration:

School Counseling Concentration

Designed to prepared school counselors (student personnel services) for secondary and elementary schools.  Two certificates in school counseling are available to Ed.S. students

  • Ed.S. with School Counseling Certificate Endorsement
  • Ed.S. with Director of School Counseling Services Certificate
    • For this concentration, Ed.S. with Director of Counseling Services a candidate must hold a Master degree or higher, hold a standard NJ school counselor certificate or equivalent, complete 3 years as a school counselor in grades preschool through 12, and complete the following three courses:
      1. CURR 531 Curriculum Development and Design
      2. EDAD 501 Introduction to Educational Leadership & Organizational Theory into Practice
      3. EDAD 505 Supervisory Leadership for Improved Instruction and Learning

Community Counseling Concentration

This program prepares professionals for counseling positions in higher education, rehabilitation hospitals, medical centers, mental health agencies, industry, private practice, and other community settings.

Licensure Candidate

The Ed.S. program is ideal for professionals who wish to complete necessary academic requirements for the Licensed Professional (LPC) standards.
