Placement Testing

Before you take the Foreign Language Placement Test, please scroll through the following questions or statements and answers for a moment. It may take some of the worries and uncertainties out of the process. If you still have questions at the end, please call the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures at (609) 896-5146.

Click here to register and take the Placement Test.

WHY A FOREIGN LANGUAGE PLACEMENT TEST?
You don't want to waste time, mental energy or money by starting your foreign language study at a level below or above your abilities. The Foreign Language Placement Test will show both you and us which foreign language class at Rider is right for you.

SHOULD I GET HELP WITH THIS PLACEMENT TEST?
No. It makes no sense for you to achieve at a higher level than you deserve by possibly asking a linguistically gifted friend or relative to help you with this test. Based on a high score on the test, we would simply put you into a higher level course. There you would quickly become frustrated, drop the course or fail it. Neither choice is desirable.

YOU MUST TAKE THE PLACEMENT TEST
  • if you are a student in Rider University's School of Liberal Arts and Sciences and if you have studied the foreign language before;
  • if you are a student at another school or college of Rider University and you want to continue learning a foreign language you have already begun to study.

YOU DO NOT HAVE TO TAKE THE FOREIGN LANGUAGE PLACEMENT TEST
  • if you start a new foreign language; then you simply enroll in the 100 course of your chosen foreign language.
  • if you are not in the School of Liberal Arts and Sciences and do not wish to or do not have to study a foreign language;
  • if you are a native speaker of a language other than English and would be subject to the School of Liberal Arts and Sciences foreign language requirement (contact the chairperson of the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures for details).

CAN I PLACE OUT OF A FOREIGN LANGUAGE?
No. The placement test is not a waiver test. The placement test simply places you at the appropriate level of language study at Rider University. If you place out of foreign language 100 into the course numbered 101 or higher, you need only complete that course in order to fulfill the School of Liberal Arts and Sciences foreign language requirement.

IF I PLACE HIGHER THAN FOREIGN LANGUAGE 100, WILL I STILL GET CREDIT FOR THE SECTION I SKIPPED?
No. Rider University only awards academic credit for courses actually taken at the university level or for the CLEP exam, administered by the Educational Testing Service of Princeton, NJ.

WHAT IS A WAIVER TEST?
A waiver test waives the foreign language requirement for a School of Liberal Arts and Sciences student. The waiver test is designed to assess your foreign language skills up to the intermediate level. You might consider taking the waiver test if you placed into foreign language 201 or beyond. The waiver test, though, even if you pass it, still carries no academic credit.
