ACS Project SEED
![]() |
Project SEED (Summer Educational Experience for the Economically Disadvantaged) is a program sponsored jointly by the American Chemical Society and local industry which provides high school students, usually 11th graders, with the opportunity to serve as a research assistant in a college or university research laboratory under the supervision of a mentor who has an ongoing research program. Participants must be from families with incomes below $30,000. Preference is given to students from minority groups which are underrepresented in the scientific community. The goal is to identify students who have shown interest in a career in chemistry and the ability to do so, but who need encouragement and guidance to get there. Counseling on opportunities available for scientific careers, how to apply for college admission and financial aid, and opportunities available for financial aid is provided. A stipend of $1,500 is provided for each student for the first year and $1,800 for the second year in the program.
Recent Participants
We have had a number of students from local high schools participate in Project SEED at Rider in recent years. Many have continued scientific pursuits in at the college level and some even to the graduate school level.

Project SEED was organized by the American Chemical Society in 1970 as a national program to encourage students from low income and minority families to enter careers in science. Thousands of students have participated. A recent national survey of SEED alumni indicated that 85% completed four or more years of college and most are in scientific careers. A condition for all potential sponsors of SEED programs is that matching funds be raised to cover at least 50% of the cost. In recent years we have been able to raise over $10,000 annually to match the contribution of the ACS. These sponsors listed above are gratefully acknowledged for their support.
Project SEED at Rider University is currently administrated by Dr. John Sheats.
