Graduate Level Teacher Certification

Teacher certification programs are offered in the following areas:

  • Business Education (K-12)
  • Elementary Education (K-5)
  • English Language Arts (K-12)
  • Foreign Language - French, German, Spanish (K-12)
  • Mathematics (K-12)
  • Early Childhood Education (P-3)
  • Science (K-12)
  • Social Studies (K-12)
  • Middle School (6-8)*

*We are developing a new middle school program track. For now, students can prepare for middle school either by completing a subject certification in English Language Arts, Mathematics, Social Studies, or Science, or by completing the elementary certification and then submitting proof of 15 semester hours in one of the subject specializations and a passing score on the appropriate middle school Praxis test.

All programs consist of four courses followed by a full-time seminar and internship experience (student teaching in a school setting plus a seminar on campus).

Teacher Certification and Placement

Graduates of education and human services who have completed all the requirements of an approved program in teacher education are eligible to receive a New Jersey Certificate of Eligibility with Advanced Standing, which authorizes the holder to seek and accept offers of employment in New Jersey schools. After a year of mentorship on the job in a New Jersey school, the certificate becomes valid for the lifetime of its holder. New Jersey has directed other states to accept the Certificate of Eligibility with Advanced Standing as evidence of completion of an approved college teacher education program.

Students seeking out-of-state certification will find that completing an NCATE (nationally) approved program will enable them to become certified immediately in many states. Since each state has its own requirements for teacher certification it is wise for students to contact the certification office (Memorial Hall, 116) for assistance in determining out-of-state certification requirements and state reciprocity agreements.

Note: All programs are evolving according to changes in New Jersey state certification requirements.
