History

Why Major in History at Rider University?

  • Innovative Program: The History Department offers courses in the history of the United States, Europe, Latin America, Asia, Africa, and the Caribbean. The major is designed to provide students with broad overviews and in-depth studies and is flexible in responding to individual interests. In addition to traditional lecture courses, majors participate in seminars at the Freshman, Junior and Senior levels. The small class-size (15 or less) and seminar style (informal discussion) encourage development and enhance enjoyment in students. The department also provides opportunities to explore history outside of the classroom through our internship program.

  • Dedicated Faculty: The History Department possesses a distinguished faculty of teacher-scholars, many of national and international reputation. The faculty has published books with leading academic presses and articles in important scholarly journals. Still, the faculty's primary focus is on teaching. Two of our current faculty members have received the University's Distinguished Teaching Award, and another was honored with the Frank N. Elliott Award for Distinguished Service. Our faculty pride themselves on being accessible to students not only inside the classroom but also outside for academic and career advising, a vital feature of college life not readily available at larger institutions.

  • Marketable Skills: Majoring in history prepares students for a variety of career opportunities which require skills in analysis, writing ability, and knowledge of the past. Many Rider History graduates become teachers. However, history prepares students for numerous other careers in fields such as law, government, business, management training, foreign service, journalism, archival management, and historic preservation. Rider History graduates have pursued careers in all of these areas, and two even graduated from medical school, underscoring the versatility of history as a discipline.
