Omicron Delta Kappa, the National Leadership Honor Society, was founded on December 8, 1914, at Washington and Lee University, Lexington, Virginia, by fifteen student and faculty leaders. In the tradition of the idealism and leadership of George Washington and Robert E. Lee, the founders formulated the idea that leadership of exceptional quality and versatility in college should be recognized, that representatives in all phases of college life should cooperate in a worthwhile endeavor, and that outstanding students, faculty and administration members should meet on a basis of mutual interest, understanding and helpfulness.
The shape of the Key represents the Circle, which symbolizes the all-around inclusive nature of Omicron Delta Kappa. The five stars on the upper bar represent the five major phases of college life, for which the Society stands:
- Scholarship
- Athletics
- Campus or Community Service, Social, Religious Activities and Campus Government
Journalism, Speech, and the Mass Media - Creative and Performing Arts.
Omicron Delta Kappa granted Rider University’s Charter on March 7, 1976, and since then, over 1,000 Rider students, faculty and administrators have been inducted.
