Applied Leadership Institute for Science Professionals

Wednesday, May 7 & Thursday, May 8
Nassau Inn * Princeton, NJ

Throughout New Jersey’s healthcare, bio-medical, pharmaceutical and bio-tech industries, science professionals are increasingly assuming new roles within their organizations. Trained in the scientific principles of research and discovery, these talented men and women are taking on management and strategic planning responsibilities that require a new level of leadership skills. In response to requests from firms interested in investing in the futures of these professionals, Rider University has created a highly focused leadership development program that offers immediate on-the job application and relevance.

Course Highlights
Participants in Rider University’s Applied Leadership Institute for Science Professionals will focus on building an understanding of how leadership drives successful organizations and how leadership skills can be learned. The highly interactive program includes:

  • Peer coaching by executives-in-residence from a variety of industries to help participants develop individually designed leadership plans;
  • Presentations and round table discussions with senior executives that
    complement course content and delivery

Core Concepts
The following are some of the core concepts and outcomes that participants can expect to experience at this program:

  • “Good to Great:" Explore why change management initiatives often fail, and learn how to use a framework that helps prevent making common mistakes that cause these failures.
  • Creating a High-Performance Work Climate: Learn how to create high functioning teams through effective goal-setting, continuous learning,  accountability and performance feedback, establishing discipline and identifying stakeholders.
  • Organizational Power and Savvy: Understand the important connection between power, influence and savvy; reconcile the difference between organizational “politics” and leadership capabilities; and use these ‘disciplines’ to build highly effective teams.
  • Using Power and Influence: Learn how to influence team members to gain commitment to projects, not just compliance or resistance. Find out how to deal with groupthink, and utilize group decision models (such as Delphi and Nominal Group Techniques) to increase organizational effectiveness.
  • Situational Mastery: Understanding the Real Issues: Acquire the skills needed to read the organizational environment, recognize key players, understand the dynamic, assess the situation and position your team for the best outcome.

Executives-in-Residence
This program brings science professionals in direct contact with senior business executives through presentations and interactive discussions. These prominent and successful business leaders provide valuable insight into the real world of business. Program facilitators Dr. Paul Falkenstein and Dr. Steven Lorenzet will be joined by Barry Rabner. [more information]
