Advisory Concerning Boys State Event on Rider’s Lawrenceville Campus

Scheduled American Legion Jersey Boys State events at Rider University will affect the Lawrenceville campus community on Wednesday, June 24, through Friday, June 26.

On Wednesday, a University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) helicopter will be landing on the back fields near the baseball field for a seminar being held from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.

On Thursday, a bomb unit will be parked outside the Bart Luedeke Center for an arson and bomb squad seminar, held from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Also on Thursday, a helicopter flyover will occur at 5:30 p.m. when Boys State participants take down the American flag at the front of the mall near Lawrenceville Road.

On Friday, the main gates, the Van Cleve gate and mall roadways will be closed at 9 a.m. and reopen at 6 p.m. for event setup, a family picnic, marathon, New Jersey State Police exercise and move-out. All traffic will enter and exit the campus via the south gate. At 12:30 p.m., State Police will conduct an exercise in front of Moore Library. The demonstration will include a potential noise device being thrown. Do not be alarmed if you hear a loud explosion. A SWAT team, armed with semiautomatic guns, will also be jumping from a helicopter. The roadway in front of the library will be closed during the exercise. All traffic from Memorial parking lot and the West Village Residence Halls areas will be directed counter clockwise around the lake to the south gate.

About 850 high school student leaders will participate in the 64th annual American Legion Jersey Boys’ State program, from Sunday, June 21, through Friday June, 26, on Rider’s Lawrenceville campus, 2083 Lawrenceville Road. The program exposes high school seniors to the inner-workings of politics, the electoral process, and ways to enhance their leadership skills.
