Rebovich Institute for NJ Politics Welcomes Mike Huckabee

The Rebovich Institute for New Jersey Politics at Rider University welcomes the Honorable Mike Huckabee on Wednesday, April 1, 2009, at 6 p.m. in the Bart Luedeke Center Theater.

The former governor of Arkansas and 2008 candidate for the Republican nomination for president of the United States, Huckabee will present an address focusing on national politics and policy, as well as the future of the Republican Party. Following his presentation, which is free and open to the public, Gov. Huckabee will sign copies of his book, Do the Right Thing: Inside the Movement That’s Bringing Common Sense Back to America.

Huckabee is an ordained minister who earned a B.A. from Ouachita Baptist University in 1975 and a master’s degree from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1980. He served as pastor of Baptist congregations in Pine Bluff and Texarkana, Ark., during the 1980s while also heading up the religious-themed television station KBSC (now KLFI).

He was elected lieutenant governor of Arkansas in a 1993 special election (after Gov. Bill Clinton was elected U.S. president), and took over as governor in 1996 when the incumbent, Gov. James Guy Tucker Jr., resigned following his conviction for mail fraud and conspiracy. Huckabee was re-elected in 1998 and 2002, and then announced in 2007 that he would run for the Republican nomination for president. After winning five state primaries and four state caucuses, including the strategically significant Iowa caucuses, he dropped out of the race in March 2008 and threw his support behind the eventual nominee, Sen. John McCain.

Gov. Huckabee will be the special guest at a VIP reception prior to his public presentation. A limited number of $200 tickets are available for the reception, the proceeds from which will support the endowment of the Rebovich Institute for New Jersey Politics. For details, please call 609-896-5192 or e-mail Dan Higgins at dhiggins@rider.edu.

The Rebovich Institute for New Jersey Politics is a dynamic and creative home for students who are interested in networking, studying and gaining practical experience in New Jersey politics. Founded in 2001 by the late Dr. David Rebovich, the Institute is dedicated to public service and scholarly analysis of government, public policy, campaigns and elections. Gov. Huckabee’s appearance at Rider University is made possible by the generous support of The Hennessy Fund and Politics magazine.
