Center for Business Forensics to Host Identity Theft Seminar

Rider University’s Center for Business Forensics will host a free interactive seminar focusing on the major issues surrounding identity theft and fraud on Wednesday, April 1, at 7 p.m. in the Science and Technology Center Room 102.

The seminar will be led by Dr. J. Drew Procaccino, associate professor of Computer Information Systems at Rider. Procaccino has researched identity theft, biometrics and smart card technologies.

The event will feature a panel of experts from law enforcement, banking and health care. Panelists will discuss identity theft and its forms; who is at risk; ways to protect yourself from identity theft; and the steps that should be taken if you are a victim of identity theft.

“This seminar should be of interest to everyone. Anyone who has a social security number – infants with no credit history to the very elderly – is at risk for identity theft,” Procaccino said. “Pieces of information that seem so innocent – information in the mail, date of birth, mother’s maiden name – when taken together can make someone a target of identity theft.”

Those interested in attending the public event are asked to RSVP by e-mailing Sallie Gordon at sgordon@rider.edu.

Another seminar will be held on campus later in the month for local law enforcement officers who handle identity theft cases. This is the first time the Center for Business Forensics is holding the law enforcement seminar.

“One Lawrence Township police officer told me that ‘We take more time chasing identity theft cases than any other case,’” Procaccino said. “That kind of feedback told me that we could put some resources into holding such a seminar.”

Rider’s Center for Business Forensics, housed in the College of Business Administration, takes a multidisciplinary approach in providing instruction about corporate fraud and computer crime to undergraduate and graduate students, as well as in professional development programming for corporate, law enforcement and government organizations. The Center for Business Forensics is also a partner in the Cyber Crime and Forensics Institute, a multi-university, cross-disciplinary program with East Stroudsburg University and Drexel University that addresses issues related to computer forensics that are vital to law enforcement at all levels of government.
