Choosing a Major
Choosing a major is a decision that takes careful thought and consideration, much research, and a lot of exploration. A number of resources exist on campus to help you sort through your choices including:
- Advisors
- Faculty
- Department Chairs
- Dean's Office
- Office of Career Services and the Counseling Center
- Resource Guides in the Library
- Contacts (including parents) in the field
Visit the Web sites of the various departments for specific information regarding a particular major, and visit the Chairperson or Dean's Offices for more information.
Changing a Major
Changing a major within a college is a matter of filling out paperwork, getting a new advisor, and checking to see what the new requirements are for the major. The Change of Major form is available in your Dean's Office. Changing to a major in another college requires an Inter-School Transfer form. This form must be signed by your Dean and advisor and brought to the new college. There, you can pick up information about the major. Transfer to another college requires that a student be in good academic standing.
Double Majors
Students may choose to select a double major. Students who choose a double major are responsible for all of the requirements in both majors. This may require work beyond the minimum required for graduation. Double majors that lead to dual degrees require at least 30 additional credits beyond the number normally required for graduation.
Choosing a Minor
Students may choose to minor in a subject area. Requirements for the minors can be found in the Academic Catalog. Minors offered by the College of Liberal Arts, Education and Science are available to all students. Minors offered by the College of Business Administration are not available to business students (with the exception of the minor in Economics). Students must register with the department in which they wish to minor. Transfer Between Colleges/ Major/ Minor/ Concentration forms are available from the Dean's Office.
